******* WASHINGTON (AP) - Presidential confidant Karl Rove testified to a grand jury that he learned the identity of a CIA operative originally from journalists, then informally discussed the information with a Time magazine reporter days before the story broke, according to a person briefed on the testimony. The person, who works in the legal profession and spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of grand jury proceedings, told The Associated Press that Rove testified last year that he remembers specifically being told by columnist Robert Novak that Valerie Plame, the wife of a harsh Iraq war critic, worked for the CIA. Rove testified that Novak originally called him the Tuesday before Plame's identity was revealed in July 2003 to discuss another story. The conversation eventually turned to former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who was strongly criticizing the Bush administration's Iraq war policy and the intelligence it used to justify the war, the source said. SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dismissed criticism of his $8-million consulting deal with a magazine publisher Thursday, saying through a spokesman that the work takes up little time, poses no ethical conflicts and may even be saving taxpayers money. Schwarzenegger believes that questions about his company's five-year agreement are "much ado about nothing," Rob Stutzman, the governor's communications director, said. As governor, Schwarzenegger has refused to accept his $175,000 salary. He has talked repeatedly in his speeches of how he ran for the office to "give something back" to California - a state that propelled him to the status of box office sensation and multimillionaire. FolioQ+A: Joe Mansueto-Billionaire Business Owner, Times Advertiser, Believer in Content By Dylan Stableford July 13, 2005 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1031 Fresh off his $35 million purchase of Fast Company and Inc., Morningstar Inc. billionaire founder Joe Mansueto tells FOLIO: about the opportunity he sees in the titles he says are 'brimming with ideas,' the distinction between his involvement with the magazines and Morningstar-Mansueto's own church and state-and what compelled him to place an ad in the New York Times defending his purchase. What did you see as the opportunity in your purchase of Fast Company and Inc.? I thought it was an incredible opportunity. These are certainly two well-known, powerful brand names-certainly more than just the magazines. There are Web sites and conference businesses, and these really are brand platforms. In my view, an extraordinary management team, exceptionally talented editors (Fast Company's John Byrne and Inc.'s John Koten) and the teams they've surrounded themselves with, exude passion and are brimming with ideas, and part of it is an investment in them. I have a full-time job at Morningstar and if I had to play an operating role I couldn't have done it. So I'm dependent on the managers at the publications to drive them forward, so seeing a strong team in place was critical for me. ??¦ MORE ONLINE 4. The New York PostDeal a Real Wenner as US Weekly Locks Up Min By Keith J. Kelly July 15, 05 http://www.nypost.com/business/49802.htm Many said it could not be done, but US Weekly Editor Janice Min and Wenner Media Chairman Jann Wenner have finally inked a new two-year deal, calling for $1.2 million a year. Min - while not confirming the terms - said, "It's official. I signed. They signed. It's over, it's done." "We're very happy," said Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media. "There weren't any wrinkles at the end. It has all the right things for both sides." MORE ONLINE 5. GawkerThe New Yorker suffers crushing softball loss to Vanity Fair By the Gawker Staff July 14, 05 http://www.gawker.com/news/media/the-new-yorker/new-yorker-suffers-crushing-softball-loss-to-vf-112594.php Dying to know who won the other night's New Yorker-Vanity Fair softball game? Of course you are. And because we're here to serve, we ferreted out a samizdat copy of Coach Dellinger's postgame wrapup. Seems it was a bad day for the monocle'd set: Roger Angell's Spidey sense was tingling, and now we know why. Vanity Fair Won. Again. The Small Fries fought hard as could be. We played a scorebook-busting twenty-six players, and still it came down to just a few little pitchers: Their home run hitter hit two homers, for four runs, which happens to be the margin by which we lost. It was 7-3. MORE ONLINE
