******* Nadine Haobsh became the poster girl for the blogger generation yesterday. The formerly anonymous wit behind the beauty blog "Jolie in NYC" lost not one, but two enviable publishing jobs ??” all because of her online journal. And now the industry is cracking down on staffers' Internet activities in the hope that no more loose, impeccably glossed lips will sink the illusion of perfection on their ships. MORE ONLINE

COCKED AND LOADED: It looks like Hearst will win the race to bring a British-style weekly men's magazine to the U.S. At a focus group this week in New York, participants were shown two different prototypes for a new title called Bullet. According to a source who saw one of the prototypes, the editorial content consisted of photos of scantily clad women, real-life action stories, sports news and TV listings. It did not, however, feature any nudity - a staple of Nuts and Zoo, the successful men's weeklies started last year in the U.K. "It was very Maxim looking," said the source - hardly surprising, given that the project is being headed up by Keith Blanchard, Maxim's former editor in chief.
OVERSHARING: Bonnie Fuller is not much forlong-form journalism, but long book titles are apparently another story. As of this week, her long-awaited memoir-slash-self-help volume not only has a publication date - April 11, 2006 - but a new title: "The Joys of Much Too Much: Go For the Big Life - The Great Career, The Perfect Guy and Everything Else You Ever Wanted (Even If You're Afraid You Don't Have What It Takes)." Including the part in parenthesis, which will appear on the cover but won't be part of the book's official title, that comes out to 33 words - three longer than its original working title, "From Geek to Oh My Goddess: How to Get the Big Career and the Big Love Life and the Big Family - Even If You Have a Big Loser Complex Inside."
THE SEDUCTION CHRONICLES: On Wednesday in London, Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's, took the stand as a witness for the defense in Roman Polanski's libel action against Vanity Fair. The case, which started on Monday and is set to last five to seven days, is the first in the U.K. where a claimant is taking part in a libel trial by video link from outside the country.
3. New York Times Lewis H. Lapham, the editor of Harper's Magazine, reached far back into the past on Wednesday, telling a British court about an encounter he says he saw in Elaine's restaurant in Manhattan in August 1969, between the filmmaker Roman Polanski and a Scandinavian model named Beatte Telle. "He began to praise her beauty and speak to her, romance her," Mr. Lapham recounted, speaking of Mr. Polanski and Ms. Telle, strangers until that moment. "At one point he had his hand on her leg and he said to her: 'I can put you in the movies. I can make you the next Sharon Tate.' " Testifying in a libel case setting Mr. Polanski, 71, against Vanity Fair magazine, which reported the anecdote in an article in July 2002, Mr. Lapham said that the incident was embedded in his memory. "I was impressed by the remark, not only because it was tasteless and vulgar, but because it was a clich?©," he said. MORE ONLINE

Another ratebase reduction is in the works for TV Guide. On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported that TV Guide is considering cutting its guaranteed ratebase??”currently 9 million??”by as much as a third. "Television has changed over the last five years and we are exploring ways to better serve our audience,??? says Christine Levesque, spokeswoman for Gemstar-TV Guide, who says the magazine has been considering changes in the magazine??™s format, content and operations for months. "We aren't just focusing on our ratebase alone??”it's an overall strategy." MORE ONLINE
5. Gawker.com Oooooo. Some interns got in trouble. A tipster reports that Fairchild Publications interns were showing a bit too much skin this summer, and so corporate HR felt compelled to send a company-wide email reminding everyone of appropriate standards of corporate dress. And as you might imagine, the guidelines at this fashion-book publisher are enough to, well, fill a book. Women on staff, we??™re told, were particularly displeased, which seems fair, as the guidelines don??™t say a word about men??™s clothes.
"As an intern embarking on your professional career it is important to remember that your dress speaksvolumes about you. Fairchild understands you want to express your fashionista style; however, showing up in a strappy tank top, short blue jean skirt and flip flops is not going to express that you are a smart, professional looking to succeed in the magazine publishing industry."

A German magazine sold out in a day after offering readers vouchers for a free sex session at a brothel in Austria. Readers of the Freizeit Magazine said they were shocked when they opened the mag to find a full page advert for a brothel in Salzburg. Prostitution is legal in both countries and the ad promised "half an hour free sex with a lady of your choice" for anyone who cut out the coupon and brought it with them on their next visit. Unofficial word late this afternoon was that final bids for the sale of Primedia Business came in yesterday and that a letter of intent to buy the company had been agreed to by buyer and seller. The buyer could not be confirmed at presstime. But speculation in recent weeks has centered around Apprise Media, headed by Charles McCurdy, former CEO of Primedia Inc., the parent of Primedia Business. McCurdy formed Apprise in 2004, backed with about $200 million in strategic investment capital by Spectrum Equity Investors. The sale price, an informed source said, was 10-times EBITDA, or about $375 million based on the company??™s 2004 EBITDA of $37 million. Primedia Business produced sales last year of $225 million. The summer issue of Departures, American Express??™s magazine for people richer than you are, carries a feature on the joys of seersucker. ???Nine modern men (and one fabulous bride) embrace an old-fashioned favorite,??? says the display copy. ???The result? There??™s a lightweight summer stripe to suit just about everyone.??? And one of those nine modern men? Paris Review scion Taylor Plimpton. ???Mint juleps and the Kentucky Derby ??” that??™s seersucker to me,??? young Plimpton tells the magazine, and, while we considered mocking that statement, we decided against it. Taylor??™s Plimptitude entitles him to utter such things, and, in truth, we have a certain beloved seersucker blazer of our own. MORE ONLINE

JOLIE SET FREE: Who is Nadine Haobsh? Where is Nadine Haobsh? And when will she pop up next? These were the questions bouncing around the magazine world on Thursday, after Haobsh, an associate beauty editor at Ladies??™ Home Journal, was outed as the blogger Jolienyc.com by The New York Post. Though her revelations about beauty editors, publicists and their swag-happy behavior ??” no secret to anyone who??™s ever worked in the industry ??” seemed harmless enough, her employers evidently didn??™t agree. The Web site was shut down on Wednesday. The Post ran its story Thursday, and calls to Haobsh at Ladies??™ Home Journal that afternoon were rerouted to another employee. At that point, a spokeswoman for the magazine declined to comment, but a woman who knows the elusive blogger said she had resigned and
was headed to Seventeen. MADONNA??™S MOLE: Speaking of people??™s careers being jolted by their Internet postings??¦a freelancer in Cond?© Nast??™s corporate sales division was recently fired after he was caught disseminating Vogue??™s August cover story on the Web. The freelancer, said to be a rabid Madonna fan, evidently got a hold of an early firstbound copy, scanned the story and posted it on a fan site weeks before the issue hit newsstands. The photos then bounced around online, landing on message boards and gossip sites spoiling Vogue??™s surprise. A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment, but one can??™t help but wonder, would the repercussions have been the same if the freelancer spirited out an early copy of, say, Gourmet? (Cond?© Nast, Vogue and Gourmet are, like WWD, part of Advance Publications Inc.)
AN ELLE OF A PROMOTION: In many ways and for many years, Gilles Bensimon??™s name has been synonymous with Elle magazine. But with Bensimon??™s Social Security eligibility just a few years away, it??™s a state of affairs that clearly couldn??™t continue forever. On Thursday, Elle parent Hachette Filipacchi Media acknowledged this, promoting Bensimon from publication director of Elle U.S. to international creative director of all 37 worldwide editions. ???Gilles knows that at some point he??™ll retire, and I don??™t want to have to close down Elle when that happens,??? said Hachette CEO Jack Kliger, explaining the move. ???We want to sort of evolve and bring in the next generation while not losing the key people who make the magazine what it is.???
