******* IN AN EFFORT TO WOO over readers and advertisers, TV Guide will unveil a dramatic redesign on October 17, with the historically pocket-sized television weekly metamorphosing into a full-sized color layout edition of over 100 pages in length. The magazine will also jettison its current listings-heavy format in favor of devoting 75 percent of its space to celebrity and television-related news and interviews. As part of the overhaul, the magazine is also cutting its circulation from 9 million to 3.2 million, and will be slashing jobs, although the company declined to say exactly how many. The redesign is the brainchild of TV Guide's parent company, Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc., which will also oversee a reduction of TV Guide's current 140 localized editions for a single national edition, opting for either the Eastern or Pacific time zone for program listings. The Australian mogul Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate News Corp. owns roughly 40 percent of Gemstar. MORE ONLINE

THIS may be the role that Jann Wenner has prepped for his entire life - firing editors and writers. Only this time, the chairman of Wenner Media is going to get paid for it. Insiders tell Media Ink the Rolling Stone founder is in early talks with MTV Network to do a reality TV show modeled after Donald Trump's "Apprentice." It is by no means a done deal, but if it is finalized, the show would have Wenner in a starring role. Insiders say the basic plot will involve a team of young rock journalist wannabes who are sent out across the country to cover stories with the aim of getting an article published in the magazine - and landing a full-time editor's job. Come next Tuesday, Aug. 2, Quick & Simple will appear on newsstands across America, and the timing could not be better for the new Hearst weekly, just two days ahead of OK!, the British celebrity import. At some point, the slew of new newsstand-only titles will overwhelm, but for now the sense is that there's still plenty of room. Yet in some ways Quick & Simple is a big gamble for Hearst, as its first weekly women's magazine in a field dominated by monthlies such as its own Good Housekeeping. It must also compete with Bauer's Woman's World, a long-established weekly service title with a rate base of 1.5 million. Further, Quick & Simple is moving into a newsstand environment increasingly dominated by celebrity titles such as People, Us, the Star, and late next week, OK!, a magazine with huge bucks behind it and ambitions to dominate the celeb category.
