******* ******* ******* Bonnie Fuller, the editorial director of American Media, is expected to take a whacking on her salary when her con tract expires. This year the editrix who oversees everything from Star to the National Enquirer to Celebrity Living, saw her bonus drop to only $74,851 from $500,000 the previous year. Her overall compensation didn't suffer too much, though, because her base salary was actually hiked by nearly 40 percent to $1.5 million. MORE ONLINE
2) Gawker About time, huh? Here, at long last, is the Women of Cond?© Nast competition. There were many speedbumps to navigate on the way to this moment, from diffuse nomination patterns (lots of ladies had a handful of votes; very few were clear-cut favorites) to difficulty in finding usable pictures to larger structural questions on how to define our two balloting categories and distribute finalists between them. But, willing as we always are to march into hell for a heavenly cause, we??™ve wrestled this unwieldy beast into submission. Herewith, for your voting pleasure, we offer the Cond?© women. Reflecting the disparate conglomeration that is the house of Si, we??™ve split things into Fashionistas and Literati. Cast a vote in each category, and check back Monday morning for the results. 3) Women??™s Wear Daily LIVING WELL: Angela Matusik has made her first two hires as the newly installed editor in chief of Budget Living. Scott Cohen, formerly of Giant, will serve as her executive editor, and Sharon Ludtke, most recently All You's managing editor, becomes Budget Living's managing editor. As such, the magazine will now be a m?©lange of earnest service, self-consciously edgy pop culture and bedroom-eyed photography, all aimed at Wal-Mart shoppers. (We think.) MORE ONLINE
4) Gawker We were pointed to this ad [for Details] on the Gay.com homepage, and, God, it??™s just so nice to see someone who??™s been struggling for so long finally accept who he is. (Or who it is, in this case.) Can??™t wait to see you at the Phoenix, Details. First drink??™s on us!
5) Fashion Week Daily
The deafening buzz around New York??™s media hangouts this week is that Atoosa Rubenstein is about to take over Jane Pratt??™s old post. The buzz further insists that the Seventeen editor will make a formal announcement this Friday. To some in the industry, the choice seems natural. Like Jane Pratt, Atoosa became the editor-in-chief of a new teen title in her mid-twenties (Jane started Sassy at 24; Atoosa helmed CosmoGirl! at 26). Jane and Atoosa also have similar celebrity taste, as party girls like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan have graced both Jane and Seventeen covers in recent years. And both editors are known for their extremely personal relationships with readers: MORE ONLINE
6) Jossip It's that time of year again! Nope, not when Cathy Black thinks about starting a new weekly, but when Jann Wenner makes his annual desk inspections for all Wenner Media staffers. Our Sixth Avenue correspondent writes in to explain the hell Rolling Stone and Us Weekly staffers are about to endure. Here's how the process works: First, two weeks before the inspection, members of the office management team come through and make a note of desks and offices that probably won't pass inspection. Then, a few days later, another specially-appointed staff member comes through with detailed pointers on how those desks likely to fail inspection need to improve (e.g. "some of the items on your cork board are hanging below the divider line, some of the papers attached to your cube are overlapping, you have too many photos on your desk," etc.)
7) Gawker Radar has sold out its ???first??? issue in New York, Los Angeles, and Tampa, Maer Roshan told WWD. We were skeptical, and so were you, our vigilant readers. So we took a look at our corner newsstand yesterday, where, sure enough, we found Radars for sale. We asked you: Was our discovery an anomaly, or is Maer??™s mag actually not sold out throughout the city? MORE ONLINE
8) Women??™s Wear Daily ALL IN VANITY: It seems hard to believe, but Vanity Fair just may have shuffled its cover subjects once again, after making an unsuccessful play for Madonna and bumping Scarlett Johanssen for Martha Stewart for August. In recent weeks, several reports, including one in WWD, have had Paris Hilton decorating Vanity Fair's September issue. (Beyonc?© Knowles, who had been shot for the issue, was moved to a possible spring date, along with her movie, "The Pink Panther.") Hilton was evidently booked, shot and profiled for September, but now it seems her cover may have to wait. Said to be replacing her is Jennifer Aniston, who was slated for the magazine's October issue to promote her movie, "Derailed," scheduled for release in October. A Vanity Fair spokeswoman declined to comment, but the story circulating is that too many details from the Aniston profile had already leaked out in the press, so editors decided to fast-track the piece and save Hilton for later in the fall. Back in June, Page Six reported that Aniston, in her interview with Vanity Fair's Leslie Bennetts, had confirmed that Brad Pitt had an extramarital affair with Angelina Jolie. Hilton is a slightly more evergreen cover subject for VF, since the third season of her reality show, "The Simple Life," will be on Fox this fall, and her movie, "Pledge This," isn't due out until November. 9) FolioThe Sound and the Worry: Hemispheres Accused of Censoring Anti-Bush Faulkner Parody By Dylan Stableford 7/28/05 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1065 Hemispheres, the United Airlines custom magazine which for six years has sponsored a William Faulkner parody-writing essay competition??”the so-called Faux Faulkner contest??”has been accused by its organizers of censoring this year??™s contest by not putting the winning essay, ???The Administration and the Fury,??? in the magazine. Larry Wells, who organizes the contest with his wife and Faulkner??™s niece, Dean Faulkner Wells, says that only explicit, profane or sexual content were off limits and that parody, even political, should be fair game. ???We came up with a winner that was apparently too controversial,??? says Wells. ???It??™s just a spoof, a part of American political culture.??? Wells says it??™s the first time in the contest's 16-year history that the winner has not been printed in the sponsoring magazine. Hemispheres has since decided to drop its sponsorship, and Wells says he is in talks with the New Yorker to sponsor the contest. In Sam Apple??™s parody of The Sound and the Fury, George W. Bush assumes the role of Benjy, the idiot man-child in Faulkner??™s 1929 novel, with other Bush Administration officials??”???Rummy,??? ???Dick??? and ???Condi?????”spoofed as various Faulkner characters. Hemispheres, which has printed the winning essays from Faux Faulkner and its adjoining Imitation Hemingway competitions in the past, did not print Apple??™s parody in the magazine, opting to put it up on the magazine??™s web site. 10) New York PostMartha??™s Back from Brink By Erik Moskowitz 7/28/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/26271.htm For the first time since she became embroiled in an insider trading probe, Martha Stewart's media empire is starting to win back advertisers. To do it, the Domestic Diva's company is packaging ads in its flagship magazine with spots on two television shows starring Martha herself.. In its earnings report yesterday, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia said magazine advertising sales rose for the first time in three years. MORE ONLINE
