******* Jane's Jane Pratt is blowing the pop stand, which reminds us to give the gal mags the NY Post treatment. And by the way, what about that name? Given the mag's audience of women and their frequent focus on men, how about "Sally, Dick but not . . ." Jane, as it is still called, puts "American Idol" 's Kelly Clarkson on the cover. She admits to being "late to the deodorant game"- an oversight that earned her the nickname Smelly Kelly in school, according to this month's issue. While it's nice to hear a celeb come clean, she should aim higher when it comes to her role models: We weren't expecting Nelson Mandela, but Mandy Moore? As a fun footnote, check out Jane's diary of the drama leading up to Clarkson's selection this month. No fewer than six ladies, including Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani and Katie Holmes, were on the list at various points. As the anti-Cosmo, Jane is at its best when it goes off on all those dating tips proffered by other mags. Trust the editors when they say you won't feel sexier wearing your favorite shoes to bed -if they're a pair of ratty Converse. September marks the 800th issue of Glamour, and it delivers a nice dollop of nostalgia - Ronald Reagan and his ex Jane Wyatt once posed for the mag - along with a cavalcade of beauty tips, inspirational stories and, of course, advice for just how soon after giving birth is the right time to resume hav ing sex. The tips, as usual, are good, life- affirming ones, veer ing away from plas tic surgery and cele brating a woman's imperfections. A lengthy piece on non-pill contraception alternatives is a must-read, and there's a poignant piece on life as an adopted child by Kristin Chenoweth. Also fun is the 66 years of "It" girls from Vivien Leigh in 1939 to Audrey Hepburn in 1951 to, yep, Paris Hilton. MORE ONLINE

Mystery author Kate White's day job is to die for - she's the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, the largest-selling women's magazine in the world. Yet she finds time to write delicious, best-selling novels as well. Her super-charged new mystery, ???Over Her Dead Body??? (Warner), involves the murder of the temperamental editor of a celebrity gossip magazine. Galley Girl met White between deadlines at her office building in Manhattan: Galley Girl: Yikes! The murder of a celebrity magazine editor. What inspired that? Kate White: I've heard so many people - people on my staff, for instance, who have gone over to the celebrity magazines - talk about what a pressure cooker that world is, and how people yell, tempers flare. You hear at times that it can be a murderous environment. Those are places where people work until 4:00 in the morning. It's not just dealing with news - it's dealing with this crazy news that you're never sure is true. You're hurting people's reputations and you're making fun of them. So you're doing kind of bad things to them. GG: Tell me about Bailey Weggins, your journalist-heroine. How would you describe her? KW: I think of her as having, somewhat, the soul of an outsider. Though she's worked at magazines, and she started as a newspaper reporter, ultimately she has the heart of a freelancer. She's someone who has a bit of a cynical, irreverant take on a lot of what goes on around her, in terms of the magazine world. MORE ONLINE

How much does GQ magazine like the new movie "The Dukes of Hazzard?" Enough to feature two stars from the film on its cover in successive months. The July issue had Jessica Simpson, who plays Daisy Duke, and the August cover has Johnny Knoxville, who plays Luke Duke. The movie opens on Friday. The magazine said that the two pictures were more coincidence than anything else. Jim Nelson, the editor in chief, explained that the cover with Mr. Knoxville is GQ's "official 'Dukes of Hazzard' cover." The editors wanted Ms. Simpson for July's cover because they were doing a special issue on America and "she was the perfect face for it." Still, the two covers are a marketing coup for the film, which probably skews a little younger than GQ's demographic. Joshua Katz, a movie marketing specialist, said it was a remarkable feat. "I would buy my P.R. staff Mercedes convertibles," he said. "It's a good movie, but you know, it's no 'Star Wars.' " MORE ONLINE
