SHAPE SHIPS OUT: Having given the order to transplant Shape magazine's art and production departments from Woodland Hills, Calif., to New York, American Media boss David Pecker apparently decided to make a clean sweep of it. Anne Russell, the fitness magazine's editor in chief, is out, and her remaining editorial staffers are expecting to be told any moment now that they'll be asked to choose between relocating and finding new jobs. An AMI spokesman declined to comment on that, but confirmed Shape is looking to hire a new editor in chief and executive editor in New York (the latter job has been vacant for the past year). Earlier this week, it hired a New York-based creative director, Dimity Jones.

Officially, AMI is saying only that Russell, who has been editor in chief since 2001, is leaving the company, but a Weider Publishing source said she was first asked to resign, then fired when she refused. "This was a horrible slap in the face," said the source.

LEAVING TO COME OUT: A big book deal for a star magazine editor one expects, but for a lowly sales assistant on the business side? Not so much. Nevertheless, Lauren Blitzer, a sales assistant to several beauty reps at Teen Vogue, and her writing partner, Lauren Levin, just sold a coming-out guide for "feminine lesbians" to Simon & Spotlight Entertainment for an undisclosed sum ??” though it was at least generous enough for Blitzer to leave her day job. Her last day at Teen Vogue was Wednesday.

CHICKENS, TOAST AND PEANUT BUTTER: Here's a surefire way for a new editor in chief to send the message that the old formula is kaput: Scrap the letters page. Along with the table of contents, it's the one feature that's found in just about every monthly, from the Atlantic to XXL, but according to Jimmy Jellinek, who took over Stuff in May, reader mail is "so last century, so noninteractive. Let's face it: The only people who write letters to magazines are prisoners and Canadians."

In December, therefore, Stuff will replace its letters page with a new section, Stuff Live. It still will consist of reader-generated content, just not letters. "They can't just write in anymore to say 'Sofia Vergara is hot,'" explained Jellinek, who previously edited Complex. "Instead, they could make a portrait of her out of toast."

Fear and Launching in New York
By Dylan Stableford
8/1/05
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1075

Flashbulbs flickered and a dull, dim pink light illuminated a cramped hotel bar in midtown Manhattan in May. I stood, sipping a tall vodka-tonic, waiting patiently for another, trying not to bump up against Al Sharpton, New York's defacto Godfather of Political Soul to my left, and shielding myself from the high tones coming from Tina Brown's entourage to my right. Her group, it seemed, didn't have to wait for their drinks. Sick of waiting, I took a detour upstairs, tiptoeing past the pool where the heads of Martha Stewart and George Bush lay floating like ironic lily-pads, escaping into an unoccupied bathroom. But the escape was short-lived. Through the bathroom mirror behind me stood Paris Hilton??”not the socialite but a cardboard cutout of her??”who seemed to be striking a stiff pose.

It was here, at a party celebrating the incessantly hyped launch??”well, relaunch??”of Radar, that I was reminded of something a former editor asked me: Once you're inside, is it really that cool?

But perhaps the larger question is, why did you think it would be?

Shakeup Continues: Publishers Out at Inc., Fast Company
By Dylan Stableford, Tony Silber and Bill Mickey
8/2/05
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1086

The publishers of Inc. and Fast Company have resigned as recent management changes at the two magazines have now become a high-profile exodus.

The departures of the top business-side executives at both magazines??”Lee Jones at Inc., and Matt Barba at Fast Company??”come on the heels of the departure of Fast Company's high-profile editor, John Byrne, and the naming of Inc. editor John Koten as CEO of both Inc. and Fast Company.

Jones resigned yesterday. The timing of Barba's resignation was unclear, as were the reasons for both. "Lee Jones and Matthew Barba were made an offer of employment from Mansueto Ventures, LLC and they chose not to accept it," Koten said in a statement when contacted by FOLIO:. No replacements have been named.

NYP's Steve Cuozzo Gnaws on Limbs of 'GQ' Staff
By Gawker Staff
8/3/05
http://www.gawker.com/news/new-york-post/index.php#nyps-steve-cuozzo-gnaws-on-limbs-of-gq-staff-115579

Post writer Steve Cuozzo has set some sort of record, having nearly 1000 words in the otherwise concise-ish Living section. The topic meriting such space? A rebuttal to GQ's "4 Best Cities on Earth (To Eat In)" feature, in which New York is not included. In fact, GQ includes a NYC sidebar to express that our tomato sauce is "crappy" and our scene is "obnoxious." Stupid jerks.

Oh, wait ??” we don't really care what GQ thinks. But Cuozzo, well, he takes this shit seriously. He thinks GQ's article is "grotesque," "off-balance," and ends the piece by suggesting that the magazine "stick with [their] cafeteria pablum and Times Square crap and leave the rest of New York alone." And no, this is not an op-ed article.

We know relatively little about Cuozzo, but we're starting to imagine him as helmeted Frank Bruni.

The Greatest American Magazine Lauch: In Which 'Radar' Teaches Us About Magazine Distribution
By Gawker Staff
7/1/05
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=919

We received an interesting email late yesterday afternoon from the good folks at Radar. Seems they're not pleased with our reports that the magazine, contrary to Maer Roshan's claims, is actually not sold out.

While we've long abandoned any hope of accurate coverage from Gawker, the flawed assumptions behind your recent posts on Radar call for a response. As a virtual publication, you seem to be unfamiliar with the standard practices and terminology of the magazine industry, so here's a brief tutorial.

We get schooled by consumer marketing SVP Susan Blattman after the jump. But we also wonder if perhaps her education initiative should begin at home.
