******* Back when black folk were Colored, pretty was light skin and "good hair." Rarely was it dark skin and nappy hair. Pretty was thin lips and a keen nose. Rarely was it thick lips and a much more ample nose. Pretty was a look so filtered through a white lens and sensibility that many black folk couldn't achieve it no matter how they hot-combed their hair trying to look like a Lena Horne or used Nadinola to bleach their skin to resemble a Dorothy Dandridge. But, of course, pretty was by far not our only hang-up in terms of our identity. The negative mass media images of what it meant to be Negro, Colored and/or black in America seemed boundless and touched everything, not least the psyche. John H. Johnson believed he could hold up a different mirror. And that became his mission years ago when he began publishing Ebony and Jet magazines, among others. Johnson, 87, who died Monday of heart failure, understood so deeply that black people needed to see the success stories within the black community if they were going to move beyond the stereotypes connected with second-class citizenry. New York ObserverOff the Record By Gabriel Sherman 8/10/05 http://observer.com/media_offtherecord.asp Reserve some extra time on the playground courts: The New York Times Magazine and Sports Illustrated are both working on their crossovers this summer. The Times Magazine, having launched its T lifestyle magazines, has a monthly sports magazine under development; SI, meanwhile, is looking at spinning off a lifestyle title. Both projects are at the prototype-development stage, according to people familiar with the proceedings. Drawing up the plays for The Times Magazine's sports effort is former Outside Magazine editor Mark Bryant. The Times hired him as a consulting editor earlier this summer; before that, Mr. Bryant was an executive editor at HarperCollins-where he had edited disgraced Times Magazine writer Michael Finkel's memoir, True Story. Reached by phone, Mr. Bryant confirmed that he is working on a prototype, and said that the new magazine remains in its nascent stages. If The Times green-lights the monthly, it will not be titled T: Sports, he said. Mr. Bryant said that he has been discussing several possible titles with Times Magazine editor Gerald Marzorati, but no decision has been made. MORE ONLINE 3. Jeffrey Weiss, 23, was detained by a security guard at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, after he was spotted standing on a bluff overlooking the property, said Sgt. Erik Raney. The property, which includes the bluff, was not fenced off but had a "no trespassing" sign, Raney said. It did not appear that Weiss was a photographer or staff writer for the magazine, Raney said. "Basically, he was some kind of scout or forward guy." MORE ONLINE
