******* One of the open secrets of literary life is that it's easier to get a book deal for a first novel, or for a work of nonfiction, than it is to get a short story or an article published in a serious magazine. This is because book publishing now revolves less around the book itself than around the marketability of the author - physical appearance; ethnicity, race, religion or sexuality; media or social connections - while serious magazine publishing, for all of its shortcomings, is still about writing. This prompts two thoughts. First: Oh, snap. You're gonna take that, publishing folks? And second: Lee Siegel just made us feel better about ourselves. How unusual. MORE ONLINE 2. GawkerMichael Wolff Continues to Make Friends, Influence People By Gawker Staff 8/12/05 http://www.gawker.com/news/michael-wolff/index.php#michael-wolff-continues-to-make-friends-influence-people-117096 Editor & Publisher grand poobah Greg Mitchell previews Michael Wolff's column on Plamegate in the forthcoming Vanity Fair - that's the Jennifer Aniston issue, and, no, by the time it hits newsstands there won't be anything in it you haven't already read about - and he discovers Wolff in full-on conspiracy-theorist mode. [Wolff] rips those in the news media - principally Time magazine and The New York Times - who knew that Karl Rove was one of the leakers but refused to expose what would have been ???one of the biggest stories of the Bush years.??? Not only that, ???they helped cover it up.??? You might say, he adds, they ???became part of a conspiracy.??? If they had burned this unworthy source and exposed his ???crime,??? he adds, it would have been ???of such consequences that it might, reasonably, have presaged the defeat of the president, might have even - to be slightly melodramatic - altered the course of the war in Iraq.??? In doing so they showed they owed their greatest allegiance to the source, not their readers. To recap: By protecting a source who didn't deserve protection, Wolff says, Time and The New York Times - and, we gather, Judy Miller and Matt Cooper and Bill Keller and Jim Kelly and Arthur Sulzberger and Norm Pearlstine - abetted a criminal, engaged in conspiracy, cost John Kerry the election, and made things worse in Iraq. Boy will things at Michael's be awkward for a bit. Especially if Wolff were to run into one of those guys. MORE ONLINE 3. GawkerSoftball: 'High Times' vs. 'Vanity Fair' By Gawker Staff 8/12/05 http://www.gawker.com/news/softball/index.php#softball-high-times-vs-vanity-fair-117016 We're told the High Times bonghitters are taking on VF's squad tonight. First pitch is at 7 p.m. in Central Park's North Meadow, and we suspect this will be about the biggest clash-of-worldviews game around. We expect worn 501s, concert t-shirts, and old Chucks on one side, with summer whites, pastel polos, and saddle shoes - or maybe a nice, supple, driving moc - on the other. You should go watch. And someone be sure to tell us all about it tomorrow. MORE ONLINE 5) NY Times8/12/05 In a New York First, Target to be Sole Advertiser By Stuart Elliott http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/12/business/media/12adco.html FOR the first time in the 80-year history of The New Yorker magazine, a single advertiser will sponsor an entire issue. The Aug. 22 issue of The New Yorker, due out Monday, will carry 17 or 18 advertising pages, all brought to you by the Target discount store chain owned by the Target Corporation. The Target ads will even supplant the mini-ads from mail-order marketers that typically fill small spaces in the back of the magazine. The Target ads, in the form of illustrations by more than two dozen artists like Milton Glaser, Robert Risko and Ruben Toledo, are to run only the one time in the issue. They are intended to salute New York City and the people who live - and shop - there.
