******* At a 10am meeting this morning, Barnett addressed her staff, as well as People managing editor Martha Nelson and editor-in-chief Norman Pearlstine, announcing her resignation from the magazine after having served for two years as managing editor. According to a memo released by Pearlstine and editorial director John Huey, Barnett will be leaving to work on magazine development, where she will report to corporate editor Isolde Motley. Barnett said she would also be working on an advice book for young women, to be published in 2007, as well as a separate magazine title that she had pitched to Time Inc. executives, topic unknown. Gossip on the street has Barnett possibly working on a spin-off of the successful In Style, loosely being coined as In Style Teen, which would rival Teen Vogue. While some expected Barnett's departure, Time Inc. wasn't about to leave the two top-level masthead positions open, especially after Angela Burt-Murray recently left her position as executive editor at Teen People to be editor-in-chief of Essence. Barnett's successor will be none other than former Teen People entertainment editor (under Christina Ferrari), YM executive editor and most recently US Weekly executive editor Lori Majewski. '???My job is to make Teen People a must-read, not only in the teen category but among all the titles on the newsstand,??? Majewski, who lives in Weehawken, New Jersey, said in a statement. The sentiments by the staff, as admittedly nervous as they are about having a new editor, are positive towards Majewski, some even calling her the biggest "teen" out there. And not a moment too soon. In an increasingly competitive market, with titles like CosmoGIRL!, Seventeen, Teen Vogue, ELLEgirl, and even Jane, circling the same waters, Teen People was off 15.8 percent in newsstand sales for the first half of this year. A big blow also came to the magazine, dubbed by many as ???The Coca-Cola of teen reads,??? when it had to relinquish its place as the best-selling teen title on newsstands-a first in the magazine's history-to rival CosmoGIRL!. Surely the financial repercussions played a significant role in Barnett's announcement this morning, considering that reader satisfaction is at an all-time high. 2. The New York SunWhat You'll Be Reading in 100 Years By Myrna Blythe 8/17/05 http://www.nysun.com/article/18732 The Magazine Publishers of America, the trade association of the industry, was once known for golf outings and glad-handing, especially at the American Magazine Conference, its yearly get-together. Lately, however, the MPA has focused on making magazines seem cool. This year's American Magazine Conference, to be held in Puerto Rico in October, will feature some of the industry's more controversial superstars, including Martha Stewart herself. Stewart and Susan Lyne, now CEO of Martha Stewart Omnimedia, will discuss brand building and their current challenge, rebuilding a brand. Other headliners include Matthew Cooper of Time; Senator McCain, who will share insights on leadership; and a panel hosted by Michael Kinsley of the Los Angeles Times about the relationship of the press and the public. Its title: "They Hate Us, They Really Hate Us." Ana Marie Cox, the editor of wonkette.com, known for its snarky take on journalism, is on that panel. MORE ONLINE 3. Media Daily NewsTime Inc. It rested heavily on a low-slung glass coffee table in publisher Tom Florio's office-a magazine with the girth of a Yellow Pages. But it was not, by its own admission, the biggest. Billing itself at ???800 Pages??? (though paginated to 802), the upcoming September Vogue falls shy of last year's 832-page performance. The ritual ???Biggest Issue Ever!??? cover line is absent. Still, Mr. Florio had bigger things to count than pages. ???How do I feel about it???? Mr. Florio asked. ???I feel good about it.??? He eased forward in his leather armchair and picked it up, savoring the heft. The 2005 September issue, Mr. Florio said, ???has brought in more revenue for a monthly magazine than probably any magazine ever published in the world-since the cavemen.??? MORE ONLINE

An anonymous tip that nearly landed Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper in jail probably wasn't valuable enough to justify a promise of confidentiality, his editor said Tuesday. Norman Pearlstine, editor in chief of Time Inc., lamented that reporters covering Washington have become too quick to offer total anonymity in exchange for information. Time is published by Time Warner Inc. (TWX). "A 90-second conversation with the president's spin doctor, who was trying to undermine a whistle-blower, probably didn't deserve confidential source status," Pearlstine said during a panel discussion sponsored by Court TV. At some point, the celebrity titles will reach a saturation point with readers. But it doesn't look like that point will come anytime soon. Despite the launch of four new titles in the past three years, OK!, Inside TV, Life & Style and In Touch, the category's circulation continues to grow. Readership for two of the category's biggest titles, Star and Us Weekly, grew by more than 20 percent during the six-month period ended June 30, according to numbers released yesterday by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. In Touch was up nearly 50 percent. Star's increases were especially notable. American Media's David Pecker hired editor Bonnie Fuller away from Us two years ago with the goal of taking Star upscale to compete with People and Us. MORE ONLINE
