BROADCASTING NAST'IES: Now that Seventeen has its "Miss Seventeen" series making its debut on MTV this fall, The New York Daily News has filmed a pilot for Bravo and Wenner Media chairman Jann Wenner is reportedly in talks to create an "Apprentice"-like reality show for MTV, don't be surprised if television camera crews start roaming the halls of 4 Times Square.

President of Cond?© Nast's media group Richard Beckman said he is intrigued by the possibility of a series built around a Cond?© Nast brand. "I think it could be interesting, given what goes on in this building," he said in a recent phone interview, while making it clear no such show has moved beyond the development stage.

Various Cond?© Nast magazines have ventured into television in the past, with specials like the "Vogue/VH1 Fashion Awards," Glamour's "Women of the Year" and a partnership between Cond?© Nast Traveler and The Travel Channel. But those deals were typically brokered by individual publishers looking to leverage ad business, not by Cond?© Nast corporate.

RACE ON THE COVER: Conventional wisdom is a slippery thing: It's always right, until it isn't. Take the maxim ??” voiced frequently by editors in private, if seldom in public ??” that magazines with African-Americans on the cover generally don't sell well. A cursory look at newsstand sales in the first half of the year appears to confirm that view. Vogue's May issue with model Liya Kedebe was the only one to feature an African-American on the cover. It was also the title's worst newsstand performer of the half, selling 315,000 copies, about 24 percent below Vogue's average, according to the publisher's statement filed with the Audit Bureau of Circulations. (April, with Drew Barrymore, was the best seller, with single-copy sales of 532,004.) Likewise, GQ's weakest seller was February, with actor Jamie Foxx. It sold 166,513 copies, 23 percent below average (and 40 percent less than best-seller Brad Pitt, who appeared in June).

Fortunately for fans of diversity, the story doesn't end there. In Style's best seller was its March issue, with Queen Latifah on the cover. It sold 951,205 copies, 10 percent above the magazine's first-half average. "I had a sense Queen Latifah would do well for us," said managing editor Charla Lawhon. "We've done a number of stories with the Queen and we've always gotten great feedback." (January, with Diane Lane, was In Style's nadir, selling 791,881.) Alicia Keys was also a solid bet for several magazines, appearing on one of Seventeen's better-selling issues (April, 355,394 copies) and a just-below-average issue of Elle (May, 265,100 copies). Keys, along with Thandie Newton, was also one of two black women to grace the cover of Lucky. Neither was a best or worst seller (those would be Amanda Peet and Kristin Davis, respectively), but both were above average ??” suggesting that for readers, if not yet for editors, race is not necessarily a front-of-mind consideration.

2. Chicago Sun-Times
New Yorker misses the Target
8/23/05
By LEWIS LAZARE
http://www.suntimes.com/output/lazare/cst-fin-lew23.html

The fallout surrounding the New Yorker's shocking Aug. 22 issue featuring Target as the single advertiser spread Monday to the American Society of Magazine Editors, an organization of leading magazine editors among whose responsibilities, we've been told, is keeping a watchful eye on the so-called sacred (but it would appear fast becoming less so) wall between advertising and editorial in the magazine industry.

Based on our experience the past several days, we would respectfully suggest that ASME, which also hands out the esteemed National Magazine Awards (which the New Yorker, by the way, has won bundles of in recent years), has all but abandoned its watchdog role.

Last week, we had attempted to have a conversation with Marlene Kahan, ASME's executive director. Kahan kept seeming to dodge our calls, saying in an e-mail as recently as last Thursday afternoon that she hadn't even seen the New Yorker's history-making Aug. 22 issue and was not in a position to comment.
