Cond?© Nast Plans Business Magazine and Web Site
By LOUISE STORY

COND?‰ NAST PUBLICATIONS has decided to go where others have already gone - and are struggling. The magazine company, owned by Advance Magazine Group, announced plans yesterday to start a business magazine and Web site.

Advertising is down at the three major business magazines - BusinessWeek, Fortune and Forbes - but Cond?© Nast officials are confident they can find a market. They have hired the deputy managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, Joanne Lipman, to lead the editorial effort, and are moving David Carey, publisher of The New Yorker magazine, another Cond?© Nast publication, to run a new business group that will oversee the new ventures, as well as others still being determined.

Cond?© Nast executives would not describe those ventures, but one executive said they might include business conferences and seminars. The executive spoke anonymously because those additional businesses are still being discussed.

Miss Zeroes and Ones: Playboy to Go Digital

In a move that underscores the magazine??™s wide brand-dissemination in competing with an increasingly Maxim-ized market, Playboy will begin offering digital editions of its monthly magazine in October. Playboy has partnered with Zinio Systems to offer single digital copies or full digital subscriptions through www.zinio.com and the forthcoming www.playboydigital.com. The issue, featuring Girls of the Pac 10, will be available September 13, the street date of the print edition. Playboy began working with Zinio earlier this year on digitizing special issues. The magazine??™s well-placed product extensions have made it one of the most widely recognizable brands since its first issue in 1953, though no longer synonymous with the male psyche. Increasingly, it??™s Maxim, Dennis Publishing??™s signature men??™s title and brand, that is beckoned whenever a publisher expresses a desire to reach the younger male demographic.
