SI EYES TV DEAL
By TIM ARANGO

Sports Illustrated once again has TV ambitions.

More than three years after Sports Illustrated's TV venture with corporate cousin CNN failed, SI is now eyeing a partnership with Comcast's Outdoor Life Network that would give the venerable magazine a new television platform, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Executives at Time Inc. ??” SI's corporate parent ??” have been holding internal discussions about such a deal, but sources say talks between Comcast and Time Inc. have not yet begun in earnest.

For Magazines, the Summer of Scientology Was Not Endless
By Dylan Stableford

For Tom Cruise, it??™s been a whirlwind summer??”even for him??”in the spotlight. He??™s been jumping on couches, hopping Parisian trains, riding motorcycles and scolding morning talk show hosts (The Today Show??™s Matt Lauer in the role of Cruise??™s sacrificial lamb), all the while proselytizing his love for Katie Holmes and the tenets of the Church of Scientology, his finger pointed squarely at psychiatry.

For magazines, it would??™ve seemed the perfect summer, given the bizarre antics of Cruise??”increasingly Scientology??™s most visible member??”to refocus the spotlight on the church??™s controversial operations, many shrouded in secrecy, cloaked in celebrity and guarded by an imposing legal arm that in the past has brought the publications that dared to look lawsuits and a litany of reported fear-tactics??”private-i??™s posing as FBI agents, phone-taps and middle-of-the-night threats, among others.

But while there are a handful of exceptions, magazines have largely passed on Scientology this summer. Instead, many have opted to focus on Cruise the Actor, occasionally Cruise the Evangelist, but not on the church directly.

First They Came for the Drinks Cart, and You Did Not Speak Out, Because You Were Not a Drinks Cart

Generations of Waspily distinguished Time Inc. editors are rolling over in their graves ??” or at least in their green golf pants ??” right now: The company is tightening its belt on expense reimbursements.

Meals and drinks with contacts will not be reimbursed unless the contact is specifically the subject or source for a story. Meals and drinks with fellow Time Inc. writers ??” or even with outside media folks

4) WWD.com By Sara James 8/26/05 Memo Pad: Teen Scene Stealers ... Mean Girls ... Graydon 'Flatiron http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/100873

TEEN SCENE STEALERS: Earlier this week, WWD reported that the president of Cond?© Nast's media group, Richard Beckman, said he found the idea of a television show built around one of the company's brands intriguing. "I think it could be interesting, given what goes on in this building," he said.

From Beckman's lips to MTV's ears.

According to an e-mail sent out by an office manager in Cond?© Nast's West Coast bureau this week, camera crews have just begun shooting a reality show based on Teen Vogue. The premise? One of the characters from MTV's docudrama, "Laguna Beach," is interning for the magazine. Lauren Conrad, or L.C., the "Laguna Beach" heroine and narrator, whom The New York Times' television critic Virginia Heffernan recently called "a sweet-looking, if studiedly made-up, California supergirl," is said to be toiling under Vogue senior West Coast editor Lisa Love. So far, the production has not been without its minor snags: a receptionist who would not sign a release was evidently replaced by someone less camera-shy. (Cond?© Nast, Teen Vogue and Vogue are, like WWD, part of Advance Publications Inc.)

5) TheDeal.com Quincy Jones seeks control of Vibe 8/24/05 By Phineas Lambert and Vipal Monga http://www.thedeal.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=hpa&c=TDDArticle&cid=1124864083699&p=M4YD5AR1

Vibe magazine founder Quincy Jones is attempting to repurchase the hip hop publication, joining with hedge fund BayStar Capital to offer $100 million to owner Freeman Spogli & Co., according to a person familiar with the matter.

Baystar managing partner Larry Goldfarb declined to comment. Calls to Vibe and Brad Freeman of Freeman Spogli were not returned.

According to a source, Jones already has a minority stake in the venture. The bid would give the bidding consortium a controlling stake in the company, allowing Jones more influence in the day-to-day operations.
