Limes? Coconuts?
******* We hope Cond?© Nast has a focused editorial plan for its new business title. Its rivals, on the other hand, seem to pay flitting, scattered attention to important matters, with the latest issues ranging from the business of Nascar to yet another list of the obviously fabulous. To wit, in its Sept. 5 issue, Forbes searches for ???the next Google??? by profiling eight smart players mining the Internet for new wealth, including IAC/InterActiveCorp Chairman Barry Diller and Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia.org, the world's largest online encyclopedia. There also is a profile of Indian-born venture capitalist Promod Haque who returns to his homeland in search of ???the next great tech company.??? In its fourth biennial ranking of the best business schools in the country, the magazine concludes that Tuck at Dartmouth is number one, followed by Wharton, Chicago, Columbia and Yale. In his column, Editor-in-Chief Steve Forbes calls for the abolition of NASA, which he calls ???an obstacle to advancing space exploration,??? and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which he calls destructive. Good luck Steve. Else where in the magazine, ???Bill Ford finds that fixing Ford is harder than he thought,??? and an article on Jim Cramer??™s ???Mad Money??? reports that Cramer still has the ability to move markets with his ???maniacal??? antics. Manhattanites may still not believe it, but America is becoming a Nascar nation. Dubbing the race circuit the country's fastest-growing sport, Fortune delves into the business of Nascar with a lengthy cover story. Part of Nascar??™s success is that its business model is so different from other sports: no local franchises, no unions. Another ???fastest-growing??? list is on companies, topped by Yahoo!, which just a few years ago was just another dot-com also-ran. Finally, New York media types will be intrigued to read a piece that suggests large companies often see performance tank following the construction of new, ambitious office towers. Not good news for such media outfits as the New York Times, Bloomberg and Hearst, among others. MORE ONLINE

Some long knives in Washington, D.C., appear to be out for glossy-mag mogul Jason Binn, a brash and flashy New Yorker who's stirring up rivalries with his soon-to-launch Capitol File magazine in the sometimes-sleepy nation??™s capital. I hear that supporters of Washington Life magazine, the 14-year-old chronicler of high society in the nation??™s capital, are greeting Binn - of Gotham, Hamptons and L.A. Confidential fame - like an alien invader who must be stopped. I??™m told that, in recent months, Washington Life??™s editor, Nancy Bagley, and her husband, Washington Life CEO Soroush Shehabi, have been watching with alarm as Binn has hired away their advertising director, persuaded some of their longtime supporters to buy pages in his mag, and listed many of Washington Life??™s longtime friends - sometimes without their explicit permission - on Capitol File??™s advisory board. Time Inc. has imposed a hiring freeze and told employees to cut back on travel and expenses as the publisher tries to shore up its bottom line. Time, which publishes more than 150 titles including Fortune and People, has been hurt by declining advertising sales at Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune. The edict was sent this week via an e-mailed memo from acting Chief Financial Officer Howard Rosen to senior managers at each of the magazines, said Time spokeswoman Ali Zelenko. MORE ONLINE

Talk about making up for lost time. Almost eight years after its last advertising campaign, New York magazine plans to start one that will change contents almost every day. The centerpiece of the campaign, which carries the theme ???This is New York,??? will be posters at five subway stations in Manhattan that are to be replaced each weekday. (The poster pasters will get a break on weekends.) The stations are Columbus Circle, 42nd Street-Times Square, Pennsylvania Station-34th Street, 68th Street and Spring Street. Many of the posters, scheduled to appear from Friday through Sept. 30, will be related to events of the day or week they are to run. For instance, as the Red Sox arrive in the Bronx on Sept. 9 to play the Yankees, the posters that day are to present the results of the teams??™ previous meetings this season - with space to write in the score of the game that night. On Primary Day, Sept. 13, the posters will depict lapel buttons for the four Democratic candidates for mayor. MORE ONLINE

With a promise to ???Win Liz Hurley's cover look,??? Shape magazine??™s September issue shows Ms. Hurley, the actress, model and now swimsuit designer, in one of her own bikinis. But the promotion doesn??™t stop there. Her face is immaculately made up with products from Est?©e Lauder, for which, coincidentally, Ms. Hurley has been a longtime model and which also bought a two-page advertisement inside the front cover. The editorial page on Ms. Hurley features the contest as well as a space for her to promote a few of her favorite cosmetics, which also happen to be from Est?©e Lauder. Magazines, of course, often blur the line between advertising and editorial content. But Barbara Harris, the editorial director for Shape, calls the issue simply a common example of ???synergy.??? I can recall seeing only one movie about a freelance writer: Woody Allen??™s Celebrity. In an early scene, a movie star (played by Melanie Griffith) takes the hack (Kenneth Branagh) on a tour of her childhood home then seduces him in her old bedroom. That struck me as unrealistic. It??™s been my experience as a freelancer that film stars almost never invite you to their houses. It did happen to me once, however. About 15 years ago, Rolling Stone asked me to profile the teenage Uma Thurman. We had lunch at the Russian Tea Room (where Rolling Stone bought Uma a caviar-blini combination so expensive it had an unlisted price) then took a pit stop at her family??™s apartment on the Upper West Side. There was no seduction, the least of many reasons being that her little brother was due home from school any minute. Even so, the whole thing was a highlight of my freelancing career to that date. EPSTEIN REACTS: Editor??™s Note: Here is Jason Epstein??™s response to the WWD Memo Pad item on Aug. 19 regarding his wife Judith Miller??™s prison experience: ???I have been shown the reference to me in your issue for 19 August. I do not recall saying that my wife, Judith Miller, is having the time of her life in the Alexandria Detention Center, but if I did say anything so foolish it was certainly intended ironically. Gossip columnists have the right to be coarse, but your writer abuses the privilege. Ms. Miller is having a perfectly awful time in jail, as who would not. Yet she suffers her incarceration bravely and without complaint, hoping to dramatize the urgent need for a federal law shielding journalists??™ sources. Without such a law, a free press ??” yours included ??” could not survive. For this reason, I found your repetition of Arianna Huffington??™s frivolous and small-minded speculations particularly egregious.??? LAUNCH FEVER: If Bauer Publishing had a motto, it would be, ???Anything you can do, we can do cheaper, faster and targeted to a lower demographic.??? So it??™s hardly surprising to hear that, as Wenner Media prepares to launch a new weekly combining celebrity gossip and ???real-people??? stories, Bauer is looking to do likewise. Sources familiar with the project, which is being headed up by In Touch editor in chief Richard Spencer, described it as a more downmarket version of People, with the sorts of human-interest stories that constitute a large, but shrinking, portion of the Time Inc. weekly??™s editorial mix. In fact, the new magazine is not dissimilar from early issues of In Touch, which started out with a large real-people component but changed course when Us Weekly started burning up newsstands in early 2003. The new title has been in development for some time and does not have a launch date, but one source said it was likely to be fast-tracked in light of Wenner??™s rival project, which is set to arrive next summer. Bauer has another weekly in development, described by sources as a weekly version of a Cosmopolitan-style women??™s magazine. First For Women editor Carol Brooks is directing that project, but it doesn??™t appear to be going well. The concept has mutated at least four times, on each occasion incorporating more elements of the celebrity weekly genre, according to a source. MORE ONLINE
