******* FIVE MONTHS AFTER ITS LAUNCH, Conde Nast is bringing new management in to run Cargo, its new shopping magazine aimed at men. Lance Ford, president of American Media, has been named vice president and publisher of the fledgling Cond?© Nast title. Ford apparently has plenty of experience publishing to laddie crowd. While at Dennis Publishing in the late 1990's, Ford steered the launches of Maxim, Stuff, and Blender. But he actually began his publishing career with advertising sales positions at Cond?© Nast flagships such as Gourmet, The New Yorker, and Bon App?©tit, where he was the associate publisher. Cond?© Nast is owned by Advance Magazine Group. The first half of 2005 was good to Cargo, and the magazine posted revenue of $16,115,525 for the first half of this year--up sharply from $9,435,130 over the same period in 2004, according to Magazine Publishers of America figures, a jump of 70.8 percent. Kelly 8/31/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/52052.htm MEDIA insiders are buzzing - and wondering just where the truth lies - in a new celebrity magazine that controversial reality TV show queen Victoria Gotti says she is planning. Seemingly important questions such as who will publish it and who will plunk down the multimillion-dollar investment needed to launch a new title into the jam-packed market have been left hanging. There is even a dispute over whether Gotti has a right to the name she wants to use: Red Carpet Living. Rights to the name "Red Carpet" were once owned by movie bigwig Harvey Weinstein and the now-defunct Talk magazine. The rights appear to have lapsed and been picked up by German media giant Bauer Publications. MORE ONLINE 3. Media LifeIn Shambhala Sun the Pages Turn East By Mary Lee Grant 8/30/05 http://www.medialifemagazine.com/News2005/aug05/Aug29/2_tues/news3tuesday.html Twenty-five years ago a Tibetan teacher named Trungpa Rinpoche started a spiritual community on the windswept shores of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rinpoche, an Oxford graduate whose followers believed he was a reincarnate lama, was one of the most important Tibetan teachers in the Western world. He had founded the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colo., the only Buddhist-inspired university in North America, and the group that followed him to Canada was to become the largest Buddhist community in the Western world. Early on the community began circulating a publication among its members, offering teachings, meditations and advice. It was called Shambhala Sun. In 1991, the magazine had a circulation of 1,700 and a full-time staff of one. These days, Shambhala Sun serves a far wider audience, with circulation of 65,000 and a staff of 19. It's still published in Nova Scotia, and while it is no longer affiliated with any particular Buddhist group, it has become one of the premier magazines about Buddhism and spiritual life in North America.
