Organic Style, the 4-year-old "green" magazine once scoffed at by critics before being socially conscious became stylish, will cease publication after its October issue. In an abrupt memo today to Rodale staffers announcing the decision, president and CEO Steve Murphy and vice chairman Maria Rodale expressed concern that the magazine would not be viable in the long-term. ???We've concluded that while so many of our efforts were very promising, in total, the magazine was deemed not to be a viable long-term business for us to pursue,??? the memo stated. According to her voicemail message, Randy Frank Leeds, publisher of both Organic Style and Organic Gardening, was scheduled to be on vacation from August 29 to September 6 and could not be reached, though it is unclear whether or not she was in the office when the announcement was made. Organic Style editor Jeanie Pyun was not available for comment. The magazine's staffers had already cleaned out their desks for an office move, according to Women's Wear Daily. MORE ONLINE 2. No way! The magazine industry may be struggling, but Manhattan-based Mad, which has provided madcap satire to generations of readers, is expanding. Fashion Week DailyBazaar Rumors Are True By Faran Krentcil 9/1/05 http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=232592&itype=8486 First, fashion market director Amanda Ross fled to Los Angeles. Then, beauty director Kerry Diamond switched sides and went to bat for Lanc??me's PR team. The accessories department reshuffled, assistants fled, and rumors of exotic staff hires-Elle's Nina Garcia, Roopal Patel from Bergdorf's-swept through the halls of 1700 Broadway. Now, three more Bazaar staffers are taking their leave: next week, associate features editor Eve Herzog begins her career as a freelancer. Fashion assistant Anne Royan leaves the magazine today for a year of traveling. And starting next week, beauty assistant editor Alyssa Kolsky is taking Charlotte Rudge's old post as beauty editor of Vitals. She began her career as a Bazaar beauty intern. Despite the constant shuffle, fashion insiders agree that Bazaar's September cover, starring Demi Moore, is one of their strongest in recent memory. MORE ONLINE 4. NY PostLack of Horse Sense By Page Six Staff 9/1/05 http://www.nypost.com/gossip/52743.htm Our favorite Philadelphia philosopher, Camille Paglia, says she knew Madonna was riding for a fall when she saw the August cover of Vogue "with Madonna ostentatiously posing in riding habit and boots on a horse whose reins she is awkwardly and incorrectly holding." Paglia writes in London's Independent: "We are told she has been throwing herself into country pursuits to please her macho husband, Guy Ritchie. As a professionally trained dancer, tireless jogger and practitioner of extreme yoga, Madonna is an accomplished athlete. But riding is not just another routine challenge she can master through sheer willpower. Along with physical skills, riding requires relaxation and self-subordination, an intuitive opening to the horse. Knowledge of horses needs to be accumulated by riders over a lifetime . . . [She] will surely persist and may well triumph as a rider. But until then, let's hope she avoids the facile, disrespectful use of horses as props and fashion statements." Paglia also notes, "I haven't been beating down bookshop doors to find [Madonna's] children's books." MORE ONLINE
