Vermont is more than just a blue state with good ice cream, it??™s also an awesome wine bar in Los Feliz that??™s home to LA Ed's next happy hour. We??™ve got a table on the bar side (as opposed to the restaurant side) set for 8 pm Wednesday, September 28. 1. Inc.
The Anatomy of a Sale--Ours, Part 1
By John Koten

There is a moment when it hits you, when you suddenly realize just how high the stakes are now that your company has been put up for sale.

For Inc.??™s editor in chief John Koten, that moment came on Wednesday morning, May 25. He and I were planning to attend a meeting to discuss the impending auction of Inc. and Fast Company, which had been announced the day before by their owner, Gruner + Jahr AG. When I arrived at Koten??™s Manhattan home, he was on the telephone with an old friend: John Huey, editorial director of Time Inc.??™s 200-plus magazines. Koten wasn??™t saying much, but he had a serious look on his face, and I could tell he wasn't thrilled with what he was hearing. Before hanging up, he thanked Huey for speaking frankly.

???What did he say???? I asked. ???He said Time Inc. has been talking with G+J for months about buying Inc. He said, ???You don't want us to buy you because if we do, we??™ll lay off all of your employees.??™ He told me I should go write a book.???

After only four issues, Richard Desmond??™s American version of OK! has been hit with the loss of its first executive. Insiders said they were told that launch publisher Gabriel ???Gaby??? Fireman is exiting. Calls to his office were not returned.

???He is officially not working for the company anymore,??? said a person who answered Fireman??™s phone.

Desmond has pledged to spend up to $100 million over six years to make the American version of his hugely successful celebrity friendly British weekly a success here.

Memo Pad: Cosmo??™s Radio Days ... Razor Cuts Its Losses
By Jeff Bercovici

COSMO'S RADIO DAYS: Elocution has never been among the skills considered necessary for a career as a magazine editor, but that could be changing. Friday brought news that Cosmopolitan, following in the footsteps of Maxim and Martha Stewart, will team with Sirius Satellite Radio to launch a 24-hour channel early in 2006. The channel will feature a mix of talk and music programming, and also will carry advertising, allowing for the possibility of cross-platform ad packages, according to Cosmo publisher Donna Lagani. (The majority of Sirius??™ 120-plus channels are commercial-free.)

The magazine??™s editors, including editor in chief Kate White, will be regular guests on the channel??™s talk segments, which, not surprisingly, will address topics including fashion, beauty, relationships and health. ???One of the things that's so exciting is, even though there??™s a big portion of women who listen to radio, there??™s not a lot of radio programming specifically done for women, and certainly not talk radio,??? said White.

The radio venture caps an era of sprawling expansion for the Cosmo brand. Earlier this year, Sterling Publishing put out ???The Cosmo Kama Sutra: 77 Mind-Blowing Sex Positions.??? With some 200,000 copies now in print, the book was deemed a success, and later this month, Hearst will announce a full line of Cosmo-branded books. In October, Cosmo will publish its first ???bookazine???: ???Cosmo??™s Best Confessions Ever??? will sell for $9.95 on newsstands. ??????Cosmo: The Movie??™ can't be far behind,??? joked White.
