******* The Walt Disney Company is to announce today that it plans to sell Discover magazine to Bob Guccione Jr., the founder of Spin and Gear. Discover, a 25-year-old consumer science magazine, has been published by Disney for 15 years, but it is "no longer a strategic fit for us," said Glenn Rosenbloom, senior vice president and group publisher for Disney Publishing Worldwide's consumer magazine group in the United States. Disney's other magazines - including FamilyFun and Disney Adventures - focus on families and children. Company executives would not disclose the value of the deal, or name the two private equity firms backing Mr. Guccione. MORE ONLINE

For any aficionado of foreign affairs or political coverage who looked at the Fast-Fax numbers released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations at the end of June, they made for some grim reading. While the Time Inc.-owned People magazine saw its circulation rise to 3.8 million--a rise of 1.3 percent--and circulation for Bauer Publishing's In Touch grew an impressive 49.7 percent to 1.12 million, some of North America's most venerable newsweeklies did not fare so well. Newsweek saw subscriptions climb a statistically insignificant 2.5 percent--unimpressive, but better than Time's 0.6 percent or U.S. News & World Report's near-moribund 0.3 percent. Taking a closer look at the hard news category, however, two publications appear to stand out from the pack, for various reasons. MORE ONLINE

AL FAYEDS IN FASHION: Camilla Al Fayed, daughter of Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed, arrives in the U.S. next week, though not to be an assistant to Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, as reported in London's Evening Standard in July. Al Fayed, 20, was never offered a full-time position assisting Wintour. Instead, she discussed a summer internship with her. "There was some talk about her doing an internship this summer," said a Vogue spokesman, "but the timing didn't work out." Next week, she'll meet with Wintour to talk about interning for Vogue this fall. "Nicholas Coleridge [managing director of Cond?© Nast U.K.], who is a good friend of my father's, took me to an awards ceremony and introduced me to Anna," Al Fayed told The Evening Standard this summer. "I'm very keen on her sense of style, which is so different from the way English people dress. She is glamorous and well-groomed, which I can relate to. Some people say that she's scary, but I have total respect for someone like that. Anyway, you have to be a bit shrewd and crude to get through the business." Clearly, Al Fayed would know since she's already earned her fashion spurs working at Di Milo, her sister Jasmine's lifestyle boutique within Harrods. She also interned for the British edition of Vogue earlier this year. Magazines may just be a stepping stone for the ambitious Al Fayed, though, who previously declared that she wants to one day become creative director of Harrods. MORE ONLINE

It's been three days since former Us Weekly executive editor Lori Majewski officially started her new job as editor in chief at Teen People and moved into her office on the 35th floor of the Time Inc. building. And by all accounts, about the only noticeable change to the office hasn't been the rapid letting go of staffers or the installation of an all-black dress code, but rather has to do with Majewski's own appearance. Not only did she bring Lindsay Soll from Us Weekly to serve as her new assistant-former editor in chief Amy Barnett's assistant, Sharan Ali, defected to Essence to assist editor in chief Angela Burt-Murray-but staffers have been commenting that Majewski's been very professional and very polished in her demeanor-both in conduct and in her attire. Majewski's been sporting tweed heels, trouser pants, fitted blazer jackets, or what one staffer described best described as ???cute business,??? a far cry from the relaxed, California girl-look she channeled at her former haunts. ???It's been so pleasant and non specific,??? was how another staffer put it, adding that the mood of the magazine has been very light. ???No one here is nervous [about the future of their jobs]; she's just so nice.??? Employees may not want to count on that feeling lasting too long. In a meeting she called with on Tuesday in which she personally met with each and every staffer, Majewski wouldn't go into specifics, but did indicate that there were going to be significant changes made to the magazine.

Most of us remember our 21st birthday as a sloshy haze of tequila shots and keg stands. Elle magazine's big bash last night was decidedly classier: champagne replaced Corona, Lindsay Lohan stood in for drunken sorority girls and instead of an iPod mix, the speakers blared a Gucci-clad Kanye West. The main entertainment was a short set by the Grammy-winning rapper, but guests like Elle editor-in-chief Roberta Meyers, designer Miguel Pe?±a and Rebecca Romijn also played roulette and blackjack for the Entertainment Industry Foundation's National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance and The Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health. Publicity princess Keisha Johnson tried her hand at the tables as the former Mrs. Stamos encouraged her to buy a new Lambertson Truex clutch-she stars in the ads for the suede pochettes, which retail at Bloomingdale's with proceeds going to the EIF. While Rebecca rhapsodized on Lambertson, Mariska Hargitay dished on her fashion week schedule: ???Vera, Carolina, Marc, and Behnaz. I never get to go to any fashion shows because we're shooting Law & Order, but this week our schedule is later. Usually people ask me what shows I'm going to and I cry! I finally feel like a girl!???
