WEIGHING KATRINA PIX
By Keith J. Kelly
9/9/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/52393.htm

A request by FEMA that news organizations not photograph dead bodies being recovered in New Orleans is not going to fly with the major newsweeklies.

???I understand the request, but to not take pictures of dead bodies is not something we can heed,??? said Jim Kelly, the managing editor of Time.

There are several pictures of flood victims in the current issue of Time, but Kelly said victims' faces are deliberately not shown.

More scrutiny for New Yorker
By Lewis Lazare
9/9/05
http://www.suntimes.com/output/lazare/cst-fin-lew08.html

The stage is set for what may prove to be a defining moment in the history of the American Society of Magazine Editors, a group of high-powered editors from more than 850 magazines, including many of the nation's most well-known and prestigious. On Tuesday, the ASME board of directors is expected to deal with the New Yorker magazine's controversial Aug. 22 issue, which had Target as its sole advertiser

That issue, featuring a slew of Target ???ads??? masquerading as illustrations done up in the style of the New Yorker??™s famous drawings and cartoons, marked the first time in the magazine??™s storied history that it had published an edition with just one advertiser.

At next week??™s ASME board meeting, the group will likely consider whether the New Yorker was in direct violation of the group's published editorial guidelines, which, among other things, stipulate single advertiser issues should include a letter from the editor or publisher explaining the advertiser had no influence over the editorial content.

Henry Luce III, 80, Publisher of Time and Philanthropist, Dies
By Douglas Martin
9/9/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/09/nyregion/09luce.html

Henry Luce III, the elder son of the founder and editor in chief of Time Inc., who held prominent positions at the company and went on to be head of the Henry Luce Foundation, died on Wednesday at his summer home on Fishers Island, N.Y. He was 80.

The cause was not immediately determined, said Terry Lautz, vice president of the foundation.

Henry Luce III, the son of Henry R. Luce, was the grandson of Henry Winters Luce, who, with his wife, Elizabeth, was an educational missionary in China. Henry III, known by the nickname Hank, had no middle name.

Your Bodies, Yourselves, Your Scary Magazine
By Gawker Staff

http://www.gawker.com/news/seventeen/index.php#your-bodies-yourselves-your-scary-magazine-124655

You??™d think we??™re be the perfect audience for Seventeen??™s ???Vagina 101??? feature, being that half of us has absolutely no expertise on the matter and the other half patently refuses to sit on a toilet with a hand mirror and figure things out. But we??™re not. In fact, it just freaks us out.

With its ???What??™s Normal and What??™s Not??? and its ???Owners Manual: Your Vulva Has a Lot of Parts ??” Check Out Where They Are and What They Do,??? the October issue of the teen stalwart is giving us a horrible flashback to middle-school health classes and the overwhelming fear that someone will imminently wheel in a TV and VCR to show us ???The Miracle of Life,??? in which that skeevy tattooed couple lets PBS film their delivery.

All that said, ???Anus: The opening of the rectum, where feces come out,??? is the single best service-journalism sentence we??™ve ever read. The 2005 Ellie for personal service is officially now locked up.

Last Words: A Testament to Hunter Thompson
By Henry Allen
9/9/05
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/08/AR2005090801993.html

They found Hunter S. Thompson??™s suicide note, and it twists our moral telescopes back into the focus we had when we first heard that he'd shot himself in the head.

You recall that on Sunday, Feb. 20, when he took himself out, we wanted to think that it was a .45-caliber hara-kiri, an act of honor by a 67-year-old cultural hero who hadn??™t written much major work for 30 years, and now faced old age with a broken leg, a hip replacement, an addiction to alcohol and a habitual fondness for whatever else would light his crazed Christmas tree of a mind.

But no, we quickly learned that it wasn??™t that pretty. He killed himself while talking on the phone with his wife, Anita. In the house with him were his son Juan, and his grandson. Not so honorable.

The number 15 seems to gaining popularity these days. Following Henri Bendel??™s delivery yesterday of 15 hatboxes filled with fashion week goodies, Strenesse??”which is presenting their first U.S. fashion show on Sunday as part of Olympus Fashion Week??”is delivering cashmere sweaters to key editors and buyers, with perhaps the intention that these high-fashion women will proudly wear them while waiting inside the air-conditioned tents. And the lucky 15 are:

Cindy Weber Cleary / In Style
Virginia Smith / Vogue
Nicole Fritton / Harper??™s Bazaar
Nina Garcia / Elle
Gretchen Gunlocke / Town & Country
Ruth Basloe / Self
Lois Joy Johnson / More
Kate Dimmock / Shop Etc.
Hope Greenberg / Lucky
Tracy Taylor / Marie Claire
Lauren Goodman / Vitals
Sasha Charnin / Allure
Sasha Iglehart / Glamour
Roopal Patel / Bergdorf Goodman
Joanna Jacovini / Interview

At a retail cost of $500 a sweater, Strenesse gives new definition to ???fashion investment.???

Circ Scandals Lead to Contested ABC Board Seat
By Tony Silber and Kristina Joukhadar
9/8/05
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1162

In a move that reflects unrest over the recent circulation scandals, a seat on the Audit Bureau of Circulations board of directors is being contested in a vote to be held at the annual meeting on November 4.

David Rock, director of online/partnerships at Ziff Davis Media, is running for the seat currently held by Peter Armour, senior vice president of consumer marketing at Advance Magazine Group and vice chairman of the 36-member ABC board. Members serve two-year terms, and typically are not challenged. Armour has been on the board for 14 years and has never been challenged.

Nine seats in the 17-seat publisher division come up for a vote at this year??™s meeting (or two of the five magazine seats). The board also has seats reserved for advertisers and agencies. Besides Armour, John Squires of Time Inc. is also seeking a new term.

SoBe scandal about to flood from inside Wenner Media
By Jossip Staff

http://www.jossip.com/gossip/wenner-media/sobe-scandal-about-to-flood-from-inside-wenner-media-20050908.php

What??™s that we hear? More scandal coming out of Wenner Media??™s walls?

The house that Rolling Stone built might be tidying itself up and begging staffers for Hurricane Katrina donations, but that??™s going to do little to dam the coming waterfall of borderline slander oozing from 1290 Sixth.

We??™re told a Wenner staffer just put the finishing touches on a South Beach tell-all, with notorious negotiators The Firm already repping the scribe and shopping it around to publishers (and film studios).

A new file on the Capitol
By Paul Bedard
9/8/05
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/politics/whispers/archive/september2005.htm

It??™s ready, set, go for the Capitol File, the highly anticipated Washington society and fashion magazine. Hitting the streets Friday, the new slick from Niche Media??™s Jason Binn is a weighty 346 pages filled with some very entertaining stories written by an array of Washington big shots like former Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta, Bush advisor Ed Gillespie and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Podesta reveals that he??™s an all-American cook, the product of an Italian-American dad and Greek-American mom. ???Family life,??? he pens, ???revolved around the dinner table and men could cook.??? Want proof? Podesta says he and wife Mary cooked their wedding reception dinner. Talk about ambitious: They fed 85 guests Italian, Greek, and Polish specialties. He even included a few recipes for Capitol File readers. Albright, meanwhile participated in a little Q&A for the mag, discussing her travels around the world. Best walking cities: Prague, Istanbul, Paris. What??™s the best way to pack? ???I finally figured out that a trip is not the time to show off your entire wardrobe. If you can decide that you can have one basic color, that helps.??? She adds that it??™s hard being a female diplomat when it comes to fashion. ???You cannot appear on television in five different countries in the same outfit,??? says the former Clinton aide. ???Being the first woman Secretary of State, I think that was a surprise to people that I had to have clothes, not just a change of a tie.???

Executive Editor Anne Schroeder says the ad-packed Capitol File will try to reveal what buttoned-down officialdom likes to keep secret: ???Washington is fun and sexy.??? If the mag turns out to be anything like Binn??™s Gotham, for example, that won??™t be hard. Our latest Gotham just arrived and features stories on the city??™s best-dressed, coolest parties and even an ad featuring a naked Pam Anderson strategically posed enough to win a PG rating.
