TRUE COLORS: Gossip has a powerful gravitational pull, as those who try to escape it soon find out. Take Celebrity Living, which first arrived in April, promising to delve into stars' fashion and decorating preferences, but not their private lives. "It's a lifestyle magazine ??” really a lifestyle magazine," editor in chief Kelli Delaney told WWD at the time. "It's not gossip."

That was then. Now, it is definitely gossip ??” or at least it wants prospective buyers to think so. Last week's cover story was "Brad and Angelina's First Big Fight!" This week's, on sale starting Wednesday, is "Brad's family rejects Angelina and pleads: Call Off the Wedding!" It also features a new logo, white with a pink border ??” the same configuration favored by Us Weekly and Star.

Delaney acknowledged the similarity was no coincidence. "The old logo almost had a monthly intimation," she said. "When I looked at it, I didn't know right away that this magazine was part of the celebrity weekly category."

Conde Nast??™s $100 Million Gamble
By David Carr
9/12/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/12/business/media/12carr.html

It certainly did not sound like a grand opportunity: a magazine is conceived to enter a category, once hot but now in decline, with a few large, well-established players eating up all the ad pages.

That may sound a lot like a recent decision by Cond?© Nast Publications to bet huge on a new business magazine, but it actually is ripped from the pages of publishing history: InStyle came out of the incubator and all but took over the girl's playground back in 1994, and now challenges Vogue in advertising pages.

Just as Time Inc. had no expertise in women's magazines at the time, Cond?© Nast, which knows what a girl wants, will have to find a way to hypnotize men as well. Cond?© Nast has built out its golf division, but you can only access so many rich guys - always a prized audience - that way, and GQ, Details and the newly published Men's Vogue appeal to a younger, more rarefied set. To offer national advertisers a significant, demographically balanced audience, it had to find a way to the heart of the beast. And business, pilloried though it may be, is right up there with beer in terms of male passions.

Publisher??™s Date With Digital
By Stephanie D. Smith

http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001096019

Last year, the buzz around digital magazines was just that??”buzz. Most publishers viewed the medium as experimental, and few magazines beyond business, tech or b-to-b showed significant traction in grabbing readers online. Year-to-date, just 23 of over 800 Audit Bureau of Circulations??™ member titles have signed up to count digital subscriptions in their reports.

But recently more consumer titles have begun moving away from simply testing to actually deploying digital technology as part of an overall circulation strategy. Playboy will launch a digital version starting with its October issue on Sept. 13 via Zinio Systems. Hachette Filipacchi Media will publish the October issue of Premiere in mid-September and Elle and Elle Girl??™s November issues in mid-October, also with Zinio. Going one step further, Hachette announced last week that its stable of 22 titles will be available in a digital format by mid-2006.

Over at Hearst Magazines, Redbook and Cosmopolitan, as well as its teen titles, already have a strong reader base. CosmoGirl tallied 80,356 digital subscribers through second-half 2004 and Seventeen delivers 51,521 digital subscriptions, according to ABC. ???We??™re now moving past the exploratory stage,??? noted Ken Godshell, Hearst senior vp, consumer marketing.

Why every mag has its awards bash
9/12/05
http://news.independent.co.uk/media/article312073.ece

There's been no shortage of divas at the Royal Opera House over the years, but I doubt the historic building has ever held quite as many under its roof at one time as last week, when it hosted GQ magazine's seventh annual Man of the Year awards.

The guest list for the bash read like a Who's Who of celebrity. It mixed pop stars past and present - from Jay-Z to Burt Bacharach - with Hollywood stalwarts Pierce Brosnan and Alicia Silverstone. On the dance floor, Nancy Dell'Olio jostled for elbow room with the gossip columns' couple of the moment Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson.

Elsewhere, you had sporting heroes (Jenson Button), TV stars (Vorderman, Bremner, Lucas and Walliams), supermodels, actors, and at least four national newspaper editors. Every table held a household name. Bryan Ferry met Bob Geldof; Jay-Z pressed flesh with Simon Cowell. It was as if Oscars night had landed in London W1.

Section of lights collapse at Diane von Furstenberg's runway show, injuring editors and causing chaos
By Jim Shi

http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=236306&itype=8486

In front of a celebrity studded crowd that included Kelly Osbourne and Paris Hilton, an entire section of lighting??”held together by two thick white posts flanking the runway like a goalpost??”came crashing down onto the floor as the models walked the finale, hitting and bruising editors and causing a scene that can only be described as chaos. Among those injured included The Daily Telegraph fashion critic Hilary Alexander, Cosmopolitan fashion director Karen Haynes, Teen Vogue editor in chief Amy Astley and The Daily??™s own European editor, Karl Treacy. While Astley was injured??”she sustained a large cut to her back that destroyed her sweater??”her affliction was not as severe as what happened to the other editors. Treacy suffered a gash on his head and was rushed upstairs bleeding from the side of his face; Haynes was ushered to an ambulance, where her neck was supported with a brace and gauze wrapped around her head to keep it secure and immobile; and as for the brave Alexander, she was taken out by a stretcher, head and neck bound with gauze and medical tape, to the hospital via ambulance.

???Don??™t be rude! Rise to the fashion occasion,??? shouted Vogue??™s Billy Norwich angrily as he chastised the many photographers who stayed on to shoot the injured Alexander. ???You are all becoming paparazzi! Get out of here!??? added French Vogue photographer St?©phane Feug??re. Alexander, who at first was in shock after being hit, was escorted to section E, away from where the lights fell, by Vanity Fair fashion director Elizabeth Saltzman, hotelier Andres Balazs and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune. French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld quickly joined the group, as did show publicists Deborah Hughes and Karla Otto. Hughes immediately called for the ambulance and rushed Alexander a cold bottle of water to help sustain the swelling. ???Hilary didn??™t look so good and she??™s a tough cookie,??? said Barneys New York??™s Julie Gilhart. A visibly shaken??”and crying??”Diane von Furstenberg ran from one injured editor to another, making sure they were ok and embracing them. Her offices were completely evacuated by the fire department, leaving the likes of Vanity Fair fashion director Anne McNally and painter Anh Duong speechless in shock. A representative for Astley said that she went home, skipping Tuleh, which was taking place at 7pm after the 6pm DVF show, to be with her family. Though she noted that Astley was a bit shaken up, she did not go to the ambulance that was called for her.

The section of lights fell after eyewitnesses said that during the show??”and with help from the vibrations from the music and the models walking no less??”the goalposts began shaking. The lights, which were the heaviest part of the structure, were top heavy and when they fell, pulled the entire rig down with it. No surprise say some, as so many people??”including security guards??”were shoved beside the poles that many could not even see the models on the runway.
