Men's Vogue: Guys and Dollars
By Peter Carlson

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/12/AR2005091201555.html

Human history is, among other things, a compendium of bad ideas -- monarchy, communism, Prohibition, the designated hitter, the XFL, reality TV. And now, the folks at the Conde Nast magazine empire have added another horrific idea to this wretched list: Men's Vogue.

Men's Vogue ? The very name is a truly moronic oxymoron, like holy war or garlic mouthwash . But alas, it is true: Last week, after a century of Vogue and a few years of Teen Vogue, Conde Nast launched Men's Vogue, the first Vogue for American men. And the company is pondering the possibilities of a magazine to be called Vogue Living.

Why? Wasn't one Vogue enough? Was there a groundswell of demand for more Vogues? Were men and teenagers besieging the Conde Nast building, wearing Armani suits and chanting, "We want our own Vogues," while pumping their meticulously manicured fists into the air?

Set against a backdrop of returning 'net advertising and a chief publishing competitor, Cond?© Nast, setting up for a run at its business titles, Time Inc. and CNN announced today that they will merge existing business Web sites??”CNNMoney.com, Fortune.com, FSB.com and Business2.com??”and relaunch in January as the singularly-branded CNNMoney.com.

Both Time Inc. and Turner Broadcasting, CNN's parent company, are owned by Time Warner.

Carrie Welch, a spokesperson for the Fortune Group, says the merger will align its financial and business content under a single moniker, and that the move is by no means a cost-cutting one.

Penthouse Media Group Inc., publisher of the men's magazine, raised $48 million in part to fund an adult entertainment broadcast network that would compete with Playboy Enterprises Inc.'s Spice and New Frontier Media Inc.'s Erotic.

Penthouse raised $15 million in preferred stock and $33 million in bonds, according to a private-placement notice filed September 6 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The company will use $26.2 million to repay debt, including money owed to Chief Executive Officer Mark Bell's buyout firm in Boca Raton, Florida. It will devote $11.5 million to developing the new network.

New York based Penthouse Media has been changing the focus of its magazine from pornography to less-racy men's lifestyle articles. Television is another leg of Bell's strategy to turn around the closely held company, which his firm bought out of bankruptcy protection.

"My roommate is moving out of our 2-bedroom brooklyn apartment the last week of September, so I'm looking for someone for Oct. 1. We live in a 6-floor red brick-white trim Ft. Green/Clinton Hill Co-op. There's an elevator, a bike room and laundry on site. We also have a security guard from 4 pm to midnight. The smaller room for rent is $800 plus half of the utilities, one of which will require you to pay half of the $150 cable and road runner bill (I need both of these things for work, and well, I doubt you're going to hold out from watching Sex and the City). The room has built-in bookshevles, and my roommie is looking to sell her year-old full-size bed and amoire. Aside from your room, the apartment is fairly furnished. Other utilities comprise of electricity and gas. No security deposit is required. About me: I'm a 25-yr-old reporter/writer at a weekly, which means I'm at the office a lot of the time. I really do enjoy cooking, and it'd be great to have someone that e! njoys some of the same tastes and who would be willing to go halfers on groceries with me. I tend to have people over for dinner parties about once a month. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at vjuare@yahoo.com."
