Going Fashion Forward

MARTHA Stewart is working on the launch of a new lifestyle magazine - the first new publication since she was released from prison in March.

The new title will attempt to add a big splash of fashion to the domestic diva's repertoire. Staffers are said to be scrambling to try to get the prototype circulating on Madison Avenue sometime in the next few weeks with the hope that a product can still be rushed onto newsstands by the spring of 2006, according to an informed source.

The target audience is the 30-something set. The company's flagship magazine, Martha Stewart Living has been steadily climbing in the second and third quarters this year, though ad pages have not recovered to the levels they were at before the ImClone scandal engulfed Martha and sent her to prison for five months for lying to federal investigators.

Signs of a slowdown for magazines
By Diego Vasquez

Amid rosier forecasts, consumer magazines have enjoyed a largely healthy year, but a dip in advertising could be in the works, reflecting a U.S. economy grown increasingly shaky over the past several months, beginning well before the tragedy of the Gulf region.

The signs are present in the ad page count for August, out yesterday from the Publisher's Information Bureau. Year to date, ad pages are still ahead, up 1.6 percent over the first eight months of 2004. Yet pages for the month of August were off 1.9 percent from last August. Coming off months of month-to-month page growth--May pages were up 4.2 percent, June 2.6 percent, and July 3.4 percent--it could well forebode a slower fall.

In all, of the 20 magazine categories tracked by Media Life, 14 reported ad page gains through August. Last month, 14 categories were up, and in June that number was 13. Reported ad revenues, based on rate cards before discounting, were up 8.9 percent through August, to $14.83 billon. That figure includes Sunday titles.

US Media Giant Hearst Corporation's Magazine unit is looking for takeover targets, in particular publishing houses, to add to its portfolio in Europe, head of Hearst Magazines George Green told the Financial Times Deutschland in an interview. 'It is definitely necessary for us to expand here (in Europe),' Green told the newspaper.

While he said the company has increased interest in publishers in Europe, no concrete steps to acquire a particular company have been taken.

Green also noted that the German market conditions are improving, offering a window of opportunity for investment in the country.

Supermodel and tabloid favourite Kate Moss has been signed up to guest edit the French issue of Vogue magazine, in an issue that is reported to include a covermount CD featuring Moss singing a duet with her lover Pete Doherty.

According to a report in The Sun, Moss and Doherty have recorded a song called 'La Belle et La Bete', which translates as "Beauty and the Beast", to feature as a covermount CD on the issue of Vogue.

Doherty will already be familiar with Paris. He shot the video to his 2004 hit with Wolfman Jack, 'For Lovers', in the city. Staff at Vogue in France confirmed that Moss had been lined up to guest edit the December/January issue of the fashion bible, but the story of the CD was not verified. A staff member said the process was just beginning.
