FolioFor a Few Tastemaking New York Publishers, Annual Events Threaten to Outshine Print By Dylan Stableford 9/14/05 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1176 Indie cred comes in many forms, but the pulse of the independent music, art and film scene in New York can be felt every year through the reverberations of three magazine-propelled events-Resfest, the CMJ Music Marathon and Tokion's Creativity Now Conference-all within the next few weeks. But has the success of these events taken something away from their print counterparts? CMJ's weeklong rock-club crawl-beginning this week in New York-has largely become, along with SXSW in Austin, the preeminent breeding ground for both discovered and undiscovered artists looking to rev up the buzz machinery. This year's Marathon, the 25th, figures to draw around 90,000 disheveled, badge-toting music fans, A+R reps and artists, who'll schlep throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn to showcases, clinics and panel discussions, sponsored by labels and nearly every other music magazine. The 12-year-old CMJ New Music Monthly, by contrast, teetered on the brink of extinction earlier in the decade, propped up by its trade counterpart, CMJ New Music Report, and various products within the CMJ network. Resfest, the highly-regarded festival of digital film-slash-music-slash-everything else now in its 9th year, kicks off in New York this week before a rock-like world tour of 35 cities and six continents, pulling in high-end sponsorship dollars the likes of Nike, Skyy and Panasonic, among others. Res magazine, the 50,000-circ bimonthly launched in 1997 (after the festival), takes in about $750,000 per year, roughly 30 percent of Res Media's $2.3 million annual revenue. Resfest accounts for about half of the company's overall revenue figure. MORE ONLINE 4. WWD.comMemo Pad: Us Bust ... Against The Grain ... Mirror, Mirror ... Former W senior editor Rob Haskell has been serving as guest blogger. -S.J. Market WatchRecapturing the vitality of magazines By Jon Friedman 9/16/05 http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid=%7B7A3B30D0%2D02F4%2D46A2%2D8FAD%2D42E03EC22D6F%7D&siteid=mktw&dist= Give American magazines their due. And, oh yes, in case you have forgotten, magazines are still around. I'd understand if you forgot. In recent years, publishers' laziness and lack of innovation have essentially enabled blogs to hijack the intangible "buzz" that the mainstream media crave. MORE ONLINE 6.
