******* "I am not good on the phone, with words," JESSICA SIMPSON explained at a party for OK Magazine at the Garden of Ono on Tuesday night.. "You know, I have to think about what I am going to say." Which is why an OK Magazine party was a natural place to meet Ms. Simpson. OK, you see, pays some of the stars who grace its cover, including Ms. Simpson, and gives them approval over what is printed. We do not participate in that sort of business, of course. MORE ONLINE
2. Boston Globe
Starting tomorrow, Boston gets its very own celebri-zine, Boston Common, a 352-page doorstop filled with glossy ads for things you can't afford -- diamond-encrusted watches, fabulous homes -- and puffy, party-oriented proto-journalism. Boston Common comes to us from Jason Binn, a 37-year-old graduate of Boston University. Binn, the CEO of New York's Niche Media, is the Energizer Bunny of the luxury magazine world. With financial backers such as film producer Harvey Weinstein and his father, Moreton Binn, a once-legendary Manhattan businessman specializing in barter, he has been working overtime to give the glitterati the kind of journalism they want. That means nice, well-lit pictures and interviews with questions like, ''How do you jam philanthropy into your busy schedule?". ''When people see themselves in his pages, they see a reflection of their upscale lifestyle," says magazine consultant Samir Husni, who is the chairman of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi. ''It puffs their ego -- he's making customers for life.". MORE ONLINE 3. First, I didn't see any advertisements. Second, the magazine was festooned with pages of hip illustrations, stylized cartoons with figures strutting, kibitzing, consuming, generally looking urban and cool. The drawings were rendered in different styles, all imaginative and contemporary, and used only black, white and red. Looking closely, you'd notice a motif of red-and-white concentric circles. The overall effect was confusing, as if The New Yorker had been hijacked by a gang of art school seniors. Were these graphics supposed to illustrate the articles they ran alongside? And where were the ads? MORE ONLINE
