Now that the long summer has ended, New Yorkers begin their nesting seasons, getting their homes ready for holiday soirees that will last well into spring.

Trend alert!!!! Elle D?©cor tells us that damask is back in and gives us a Top 10 list of nesting tables, ranging from a $475 Lucite set to a $3,800 offering painted black with gold leaf. Go deeper into the mag and you'll get a inside look at the Hamptons hideaway of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick; a comfy place without celebrity pretension.

OK, we don't understand high-concept Dwell but that doesn't stop it from being a fun read. The super-high-end modern design mag is eye candy, pure and simple (well, maybe not so simple). Its product pages are fun: one highlight this month is a clear bathroom sink that doubles as a fish tank. The book's feature on design for outdoors is inaccessible, but hey, who wouldn't want an orange, undulating ribbon wall in the garden?

MOVING MEN: Men??™s Vogue has officially been on sale for less than three weeks, but talk is already turning to the magazine??™s future. Sources within Cond?© Nast say the company has begun to consider candidates for a full-time publisher, who would report either to president and chief executive officer Chuck Townsend, or to Vogue publisher Tom Florio, who is listed as group publisher on the debut issue??™s masthead. Topping Florio??™s wish list, according to several insiders, is Gourmet publisher Giulio Capua, who was also talked about as a potential replacement for Cargo publisher Alan Katz, now at Vanity Fair. (The Cargo job ended up going to former Dennis Publishing executive Lance Ford.)

Reached Friday, Florio confirmed he was talking to candidates, but said Capua was not at present among them. "I adore Giulio. He's a superstar," he said. "He'd be the best person for it, probably. But he's doing a great job where he is."

"I've heard the rumors, but I certainly haven't talked to anyone about it," confirmed Capua.

New Mags Launching Via Newspapers
By Stephanie D. Smith

Publishers are increasingly taking a page from the likes of Gannett??™s USA Weekend, opting to enter the marketplace via newspapers instead of traditional, costly stand-alone titles. Last year, for instance, Time Inc. revived Life as a supplement that runs in some 50 papers. And in February 2006, Publishers Group of America will unveil the foodie monthly Relish in several hundred small, independently owned newspapers.

Joining the fray next year will be Garcia Miller, a consortium of publishing veterans comprised of Tampa, Fla.-based newspaper consultant Mario Garcia, and former Esquire art director John Miller, along with a California-based private investor. The group will roll out a series of magazines timed to major sporting events. It has also signed on A-list sports vets--Joe Montana, Richard Petty, Dick Vitale and Cal Ripken Jr.--who will lend their names to the magazine, act as editorial directors and even contribute columns. Each 45-page, 3 million-circ glossy will be available two weeks prior to major sporting events in 12 papers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.

The content of these series of guides will include personal essays and irreverent features from the sports stars, rather than pages of stats and figures.

When Steve Coll moves his stuff from the Washington Post to the New Yorker, the former managing editor won??™t have to go far: The Manhattan-based magazine is opening its first Washington bureau four blocks from the Post newsroom in early October.

???Washington is the capital of the most powerful country in the world at an imperial moment,??? says New Yorker editor David Remnick. ???I don??™t feel squeamish??? about building a bureau.

Remnick and the New Yorker have been building a pathway between the Post and the magazine, too. As Steve Coll considered his prospective colleagues at the magazine, he says, ???It started to feel like a pretty familiar place.???

At The New York Times, 45 newsroom job cuts. At The Boston Globe, 35. Here at Newsday, yet another 45. And those are ones announced in just the past few weeks.

Yes, those in mainstream media are facing the same industry shifts and painful employment crunches that others have faced. Add them to the publishing industry overall that's been headed downward in New York City and on Long Island during most of the past five years. That includes newspapers, magazines, books - even catalogues, atlases, shoppers. In August 2000, there were 61,500 such jobs in the city and 9,700 on Long Island. As of last month, make that 53,300 and 8,400 respectively, according to the New York Labor Department.

While it's hard for most any midcareer professional who has to transition into a new field, journalists called on to do so face a couple of especially tricky issues.
