******* The billionaire Newhouse family took a giant step yesterday to bring all its diverse magazine holdings under one name, Cond?© Nast Publications. The move means that the Advance Magazine Group moniker, which had been used as the parent company name, will be retired. Many see the new operation creating a horse race in a succession plan to eventually succeed Charles Townsend, the chief executive officer of Cond?© Nast, who is now 61. MORE ONLINE 2. WWDVanity Flair By Jeff Bercovici 9/27/05 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/101554?page=1 Tom Ford's post-Gucci career reinvention continues. Vanity Fair has tapped Ford to produce the next edition of its annual Hollywood photo portfolio. Editor in chief Graydon Carter confirmed Monday that Ford will be working on the March 2006 issue, selecting photographers, styling shoots and collaborating with Carter and editors to determine who will be featured in the portfolio. "I'm excited -- and a little anxious -- to see what happens when he turns his keen eye on Hollywood," Carter said in a statement. The Hollywood issue perhaps could use the extra buzz Ford's association will bring: While the franchise is typically a big newsstand draw for Vanity Fair, newsstand sales of this year's issue were down 27 percent from 2004. 3. Washington has recently received the gift of not one, not two but three frothy, fluffy new lifestyle magazines. What did we do to deserve this? The magazines are called DC and DC Style and Capitol File, and the similarity of names has caused some folks to complain that they can't tell them apart. But those people just aren't paying close enough attention. Sure, at first glance all three mags appear to be empty-headed excuses to sell ads for luxury goods. But a closer look reveals that each is empty-headed in its own unique way. MORE ONLINE 4. Media Industry NewsletterMags Chip In For Hurricane Relief http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm After the September 11, 2001, attacks, the editor-in-chief (since April 1993) wrote to T+L readers in November 2001 that in spite of the horror, travel will continue because it "is part of our genetic code--and altogether irrepressible in our souls." Prophetic words. Although the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States was a natural rather than a man-made "evil," it, too, took many lives and shook our complacency. Thus, a new reassurance from Novogrod. MORE ONLINE
