******* Fairchild Publications said it was shutting down Vitals Man and Vitals Woman effective with the winter 2005 editions. The move is likely to roil the waters at Fairchild, which has long functioned under the impression that it was, as one insider put it, "the ugly step-sister to Cond?© Nast," the glitzy publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour. The closure comes only one day after the Newhouse-owned media empire revealed it was sucking all its magazines under the Cond?© Nast brand, with Cond?© Nast boss Charles Townsend as CEO of the combined operation. "It's a sad day for Vitals," said Mary Berner, Fairchild president, who now reports to Townsend instead of her former direct line to chairman S.I. Newhouse, Jr. Vitals Editor in Chief Joe Zee will remain with the company and work on a magazine development project. Berner said attempts will be made to place as many of the 30 staffers as possible on other magazines. MORE ONLINE 2. WWDRocky Rolls By Jeff Bercovici 9/28/05 http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/101587 Sylvester Stallone's lifestyle magazine is back from the dead. WWD's report last month that Sly was shutting down after three test issues appears to have prompted some soul-searching on the part of American Media Inc. After crunching the numbers from the test, the company has elected to publish a fourth issue, to be dated December/January. The magazine's ad hoc editorial team of freelancers and Men's Fitness staffers, which had been placed on hiatus, has resumed work on the title. "It's nice to have an alternative magazine that comes from someone's voice, someone's perspective," said editor in chief Neal Boulton. Score a victory for Stallone, who was apoplectic after reading of Sly's imminent demise. "I am not another Rosie O'Donnell," he told The New York Post, referring to the talk show host whose personality title was a spectacular disaster for Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing. "I am serious about my magazine." No word on whether Stallone's tantrum played a part in AMI's decision to grant Sly a reprieve, but chairman David Pecker recently told Business Week Stallone has been "unbelievably aggressive" to work with. Clearly he wasn't ready to go 15 rounds with Rocky Balboa. MORE ONLINE 3. New York PostJane Editors Jump Ship By Keith J. Kelly 9/28/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/54222.htm ALL is not well at Fairchild Publications' Jane magazine. There is tension on the staff that founder Jane Pratt left behind, and in recent days editors have been dashing for the exits. Although an ad campaign in Women's Wear Daily praises Editor in Chief Brandon Holley ??” who landed from Elle Girl ??” for being "so Jane," Pratt the editor has been in the office only once since the sudden announcement that she was exiting. Talk of a smooth and orderly transition seems to have evaporated. As Pratt's former staff figures that out, they are fleeing. MORE ONLINE 4. Media WeekTime Out Relaunches In Bid To Stem Falling Sales By Kevin May 9/28/05 http://www.mediaweek.co.uk/news/index.cfm?fuseaction=details&nNewsID=519178 London entertainment and listings title Time Out will unveil its new look this week after undergoing an extensive re-design in a bid to ???engage with Londoners in a new way???. The magazine has spent the last few months since the appointment on new editor Gordon Thompson working with the Mother creative agency to come up with a new design that harks back to the magazine's early days as a vital tool for outgoing residents of the capital. The re-design also comes at a crucial time in the history of the magazine as the number of online entertainment guides increases and national and local papers in London produce weekly listings. The last round of audited sales figures saw a nominal increase of 0.3% year-on-year to around 88,850 copies per issue, but Time Out, by its own admission, has been in long-term decline. MORE ONLINE
