******* Cathleen Black, the first woman president of Hearst Magazines, is shopping a management memoir of a lifetime in the media world, The Post has learned. She is being represented by Robert Barnett, the Washington lawyer who scored a whopping advance of about $12 million for former President Clinton's "My Life" and $7 million upfront for Sen. Hillary Clinton's "Living History." Barnett is expected to quietly start sounding out publishers in New York this week. "It's smart, insightful, funny and instructive," Barnett said of the yet-untitled work. MORE ONLINE

From behind her big desk on the top floor of a sleek new office tower in the Xintiandi district, Angelica Cheung, the guiding hand behind this country's new edition of Vogue magazine, contemplated a very Chinese dilemma. "Just a few years ago, China definitely wasn't ready and didn't have consumers at the level of Vogue," said Ms. Cheung, the magazine's editorial director, as smoothly spoken as she was elegant in a black-and-white pattern Max Mara blouse and skirt. "Two years from now, though, would have definitely been too late. That's the way China is, moving incredibly fast." Fittingly for one of the world's premier fashion magazines, Ms. Cheung's offices are in a neighborhood whose name means "new heaven and earth," a roughly three-square-block area that contains some of Shanghai's most stylish real estate. By day or by night, Xintiandi is a stalking ground for young movers and shakers. MORE ONLINE

THE OVEREXPOSURE INDEX: It's widely acknowledged that gossip columnists have a symbiotic relationship with B-list stars. For instance, a columnist can turn a mediocre event into a legitimate item as long as the list of attendees is padded with boldface names, no matter how tenuous their connection to fame. In turn, if the B-list star possesses enough talent or cunning, he or she can use the columns to reach A-list status ??” at which point the star's publicist immediately begins trying to keep the client's name out of the papers.
More often, though, the two camps feed each other until the usefulness of mentioning the actor or musician or what have you ebbs, and the gossip columnists simply move on to someone else.
VERTICAL'S LEAP: What if you could start an independent magazine using the resources and expertise of a big publishing company? Well, you can't, but the company that publishes Giant magazine, Vertical Media, is offering what it hopes will prove the next best thing. On Thursday, Vertical signed a "management services contract" with Breathe, a year-old lifestyle title aimed at women who practice yoga. Under the deal, Vertical will take control of all of Breathe's business side operations, including advertising sales, circulation and purchasing. In return, Vertical will receive an undisclosed fee and a small equity stake in Breathe, which has a circulation of 100,000. "There's a lot of really smart elements to this business that were underleveraged before," said Jamie Hooper, Vertical's founder
and president.
************ ... that BENE, a new magazine about all things Italian (fashion, shopping, art, home, travel, food, wine and lifestyle), is looking for writers. It??™s a MUST that they??™ve been published and have written consistently for or worked at a magazine or newspaper. They should be great at research and reporting??”good at finding the story w/out a specific assignment. (For example, if the assignment is to write something about truffles, they'd need to do the initial research to figure out what the slant of the story should be). Since our readership will be well educated and sophisticated, we??™re most excited to find two types of writers: those with a smart, lively, funny style??”like New York Magazine, Elle, and Esquire??”as well as those with a smart, engaging, sophisticated style, like The New Yorker. A background in art/fashion editorial is a plus, and fluency in Italian is a big plus. We don??™t have a huge budget right now, but we??™re hoping to establish a base of writers, and we??™ll be able to offer greater pay and trips abroad in the future. This is also a great opportunity to get travel/food clips and break into the food/travel-writing world. (Bene will have a circulation of 250,000 across the United States, and will launch in April 2006.) Please send a resume, cover letter and two writing samples that reflect your style to: Joanna Goddard at benemag@gmail.com (Official Ed2010 posting) ... that Newsday is recruiting new writers for the newspaper's Impulse section/website. No experience necessary, we're more interested in people with personality who are bright, dependable and have something creative to say about the movies, bars/clubs, music, TV shows and products we ask them to review. Reviewers will write capsule-length reviews once a week for six months, and will be given free CDs, movie tickets, gadgets, etc. Applicants MUST be 21-29 years old and live on Long Island or in NYC. This is not a FT/PT job- but it's a great opportunity to have your work published (in print and online) by a major newspaper. To apply, go to newsday.com/reviews or visit the Impulse website, newsday.com/impulse. Deadline is Oct. 8. OK to mention Ed. ... that Plenty Magazine (plentymag.com), a national bimonthly environmental lifestyle publication in NYC, is looking for editorial interns to start immediately. The position is open to undergraduate or graduate students, and the time commitment is roughly 15 hours per week. It??™s an unpaid internship, alas, but the staff is small and friendly, and there??™s a lot of opportunity to help contribute to the magazine. Please email a cover letter, resume, and any clips to christine@plentymag.com. (OK to mention E.) ... that a new fashion/lifestyle quarterly is seeking multiple interns. We have some of the most influential photographers, stylists and fashion writers contributing, and our advisory board includes major designers, fashion CEO's, social figures and royals. We're looking for part-time interns with an interest in fashion journalism, art direction and production. You'll work directly with the Features Director and the Fashion Director to help coordinate content being generated in NY. If interested please email a resume to sreddy@villa-moda.com (OK to mention Ed)
