Time for Big Change

Time Inc. Editor in Chief Norman Pearlstine is expected to formally hand over the reins to Editorial Director John Huey sometime on or before Nov. 1, knowledgeable sources told Media Ink.

Pearlstine has led the nation's largest magazine publisher for 11 years. The tentative handoff date could be moved up, but it will be no later than Nov. 1, a source said.

The move has been widely telegraphed and an orderly transition from 63-year-old Pearlstine to 57-year-old Huey has been under way for the past year.

A Week After Stewart, Industry Still Buzzing From MPA Event
By Dylan Stableford and Bill Mickey

http://www.foliomag.com/1785.html
Will Stewart ever grace an MPA member's cover again? It??™s been a week since Daily Show host Jon Stewart sliced and diced some of the top consumer magazine editors at a Magazine Publishers of America Ad Week panel in New York. And judging from some of the cacophonous buzz since, you would think the history of magazines will be divided henceforth into two time periods: B.S. and A.S. (???Before Stewart??? and "After").

It seems that whatever publishers??”including the panelists??”thought of the event, it struck a nerve with more authority than any MPA event has before (Mediabistro's FishbowlNY bloggerista Rachel Sklar devoted 7,100-plus words over three posts, not including a summation three days later, for one measure). Nonetheless, there are at least two questions that have bubbled to the surface in the event??™s aftermath: Did Stewart??™s criticism of magazines??™ relevance??”rendered however funny??”ring at all true? And should the MPA have spent a hefty sum??”reportedly $150,000 for Stewart and $100,000 on the event??”for Stewart to rip into magazines in front of a roomful of advertisers?

The answers, predictably, have been mixed. ???Comedy is reductive,??? says Esquire editor David Granger. ???In order to make a joke, you??™ve got to reduce the joke to its most ridiculous point. He did that, but it??™s an exaggeration. He does the same thing for every medium and just about every facet of human endeavor.???

3. WWD Memo Pad
Memo Pad: Plastic People Of The Universe ... Big Daddy ... Anna's Apprentice ...
By Staff

BIG DADDY: Vogue's offshoot, Men's Vogue, got the greenlight for a launch on Wednesday, and now it has its own publisher. William Li, associate publisher of The New Yorker, was named publisher of Men's Vogue by Vogue publisher and Men's Vogue publishing director Tom Florio on Thursday. A replacement for him at The New Yorker has not yet been named. (Vogue, Men's Vogue and The New Yorker are, like WWD, units of Cond?© Nast Publications.)

ANNA'S APPRENTICE: Camilla Al Fayed, the pretty brunette daughter of Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, is the latest Brit to make the pilgrimage Stateside to work for American Vogue. Her anticipated arrival already has provided grist for the rumor mill: Several erroneous reports earlier this year announced that she would be Anna Wintour's assistant. In fact, Al Fayed will be interning for Vogue starting in November, a spokesman for the magazine confirmed this week. Her approximately four-week stint will be spent not in Wintour's office, but in the fashion closet and the ad sales department.

BLOGGERMOUTH: Have a top-secret project you're trying to keep under wraps? Don't hire a blogger. Former Maxim editor Mark Golin hasn't said boo about the new humor Web site he and Mark Remy are developing at Time Inc. He hasn't even publicly confirmed its existence. What he has done is hired Chris Kula, a comedy writer who performs sketch and improv at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in New York.
