******* Michael Caruso, editor in chief of Men's Journal for the past two years, told Wenner Media executives today that he will not renew his contract, which expires in November, according to sources familiar with the situation. This comes as no surprise to insiders who say Caruso had spoke of leaving Men's Journal over the summer because he was unhappy with the company's management style. Caruso could not be reached for comment. Said a Wenner spokesperson, "Michael Caruso's contract expired and no agreement to extend it was reached. A replacement has not been named." MORE ONLINE 2. USA TodayDemi and Ashton: OK to say we're wed By Donna Freydkin 10/11/05 http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/2005-10-11-ashton-demi_x.htm After two weeks of speculation but no concrete confirmation, wedding photographs are out showing that Ashton Kutcher, 27, and Demi Moore, 42, really did tie the knot Sept. 24 at their Beverly Hills home. The newlyweds talked to OK! magazine for the cover story, which hits newsstands Wednesday. (Related photos: Ashton and Demi tie the knot) OK! paid an undisclosed sum for the pictures in the magazine's first big, headline-making story since it started publishing in the USA on Aug. 3. Stars often donate those proceeds to charity, OK! editor in chief Sarah Ivens says, but she "can't confirm how they spend their money." The couple wore their red string bracelets as part of the "traditional Kabbalah ceremony," Ivens says. "Ashton is looking at Demi like he's the luckiest man in the world." MORE ONLINE 3. Associated PressTV Guide unveils full-color, larger format By AP Staff 10/11/05 http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2005-10-11-tv-guide_x.htm TV Guide released its first issue in a full-color, larger format Tuesday, part of an overall revamp aimed at trying to keep the 52-year-old magazine relevant in an age of on-screen television guides. The new issue features Ty Pennington of Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition on its cover, as well as a new makeup that emphasizes stories, columns and gossip about TV shows over TV listings. As part of the makeover, TV Guide's publisher, Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc., is also slashing the circulation it guarantees advertisers by nearly two-thirds, from 9 million to 3.2 million. MORE ONLINE 4. MediaLifeAutumn leaves magazines a bit peaked By Heidi Dawley 10/12/05 http://medialifemagazine.com/artman/publish/article_628.asp The last few months the U.S. economy has been looking a bit jittery, with the weather patterns that brought Hurricane Katrina just one part of it. And this shakiness looks to be putting a damper on the growth of consumer magazine ad pages compared to earlier this year. Ad page counts are in for September, and at first glance it would appear that magazines are maintaining the modest pace of growth, with pages up 1.2 percent year-to-date through the month, to 176,305.5, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. That figure includes Sunday magazines. But a look at pages just for the month of September reveals a slowdown in the works, and for the second month in a row. Pages for the month were down 0.8 percent, to 26,550.47. August pages were down by 1.9 percent, and that decline came after months upon months of solid gains. MORE ONLINE
5. Chicago Sun-Times
John Mariani, the influential food columnist at Esquire magazine, really likes Butter. The New York-based writer likes the new West Loop restaurant so much, he named it one of the nation's 20 best new restaurants in the November issue. But before Mariani gets to the praise, he uses his annual forum to slam two of Chicago's hottest young chefs -- Grant Achatz of Alinea and Homaro Cantu of moto. Though he doesn't name them in print, Mariani refers to "a few hocus-pocus chefs trying to make headlines based on things like burning incense next to a dish of venison and forcing desserts into squeeze tubes" -- a thinly veiled reference to Achatz and Cantu, whose unexpected combinations, presentations and custom- designed utensils have indeed made local, national and even international headlines.
