Reminder: The ed2010 book club is meeting Wednesday, October 19, and you're all invited! We'll be reading The Know-It-All by AJ Jacobs (the Esquire editor reads the Encyclopedia cover-to-cover). Good news? It's now in paperback, so all the more reason to buy it if you haven't already. Go to the back room of Art Bar at 52 8th Ave (off 12th St) at 7:00 on the 19th. We'll also be talking about the state of men's and women's magazines, and why men's magazines, and Esquire in particular, are thought of as smart, while women's??”not so much. Come if you're interested in intellectual debates or foamy glasses of beer. Please e-mail > gina_hamadey@rd.com if you plan on showing up.

CHASTENED CHEF SLIMES CRITIC
Page Six
October 13, 2005
http://www.nypost.com/gossip/55289.htm
THERE are some restaurant critics out there who behave reprehensibly, but John Mariani, a columnist for Esquire and Wine Spectator, among others, is not one of them. So it's particularly rotten that he's been slimed by a Chicago chef steamed over a bad write-up. Mariani trashes the Windy City's trendy eatery Moto in Esquire's new issue. Moto chef Homaru Cantu told the Chicago Sun-Times that Mariani sent his p.r. people a four-page list of demands before he deigned to dine there last year, asking them to pay for everything from his cab fare to his hotel bill. Cantu claimed Mariani then bombed the restaurant when it wouldn't pony up. Mariani told PAGE SIX's Jared Paul Stern, "That's an absolute lie. They're claiming I sent some kind of contract. They're trying to not only embarrass me but call into question my veracity. It's libelous. But all I want is an apology." Cantu declined to apologize, telling us he thought his comments to the Sun-Times were "off the record," adding, "It's done. I just want to let it go." Janet Isabelli, Cantu's publicist at the time, tells us her ex-client made the whole thing up.
