Judging a Magazine by Its Cover: the Top 40 From 40 Years
By Katharine Q. Steelye
10/17/05
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/17/arts/design/17cnd-magcovers.html
FAJARDO, Puerto Rico - The best magazine cover of the last 40 years was Rolling Stone's January 1981 cover photograph of a naked John Lennon curled up in a fetal position around his wife, Yoko Ono. That is the judgment of editors and art directors from about 50 of the nation's top magazines, who were asked to pick the 40 best covers of the last 40 years, in honor of the 40th anniversary of the National Magazine Awards. The picture was taken by Annie Leibovitz just hours before Mr. Lennon was shot and killed on Dec. 8, 1980.

The second best was the August 1991 cover of Vanity Fair featuring a naked and pregnant Demi Moore, also photographed by Ms. Leibovitz. Coming in third was the April 1968 cover of Esquire showing a bare-chested Muhammad Ali, pierced by arrows for refusing to be inducted into the United States Army.

The winning covers were announced here on Monday by the American Society of Magazine Editors, which conducted the contest as a way to celebrate magazines at a time when the industry is facing numerous challenges, especially from the Internet.

Pushed by Product Placement, ASME Revises Editorial Guidelines
By Dylan Stableford

LAS CROABAS, Puerto Rico ??“ With product placement in the minds of more and more media marketers, the American Society of Magazine Editors today issued updated guidelines addressing the so-called "church and state" seperation of advertising and editorial content in magazines.

The updated guidelines (available here in PDF format) cover ten editorial topics, including design, covers and product placement and integration.

While the guidelines state "repeated and willful violations will result in public sanction and disqualification" from ASME's National Magazine Awards, it is unclear how many violations would constitute such a disqualification, nor does it define what a "willful" violation is.

Memo Pad: Rolling The Dice ... New Regime ... Moving House ...
By Sara James and Jeff Bercovici

NEW REGIME: Amid all the boozing and schmoozing, there was some actual industry news coming out of the American Magazine Conference. Hachette Filipacchi Media's chief executive officer, Jack Kliger, formally took over from Reader's Digest ceo Tom Ryder as chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America. In his address, Kliger outlined a vision for the most nettlesome issue facing publishers today: how to fix the circulation end of the business. He called for improving the timeliness of audience measurement so that magazines can calibrate their ad rates on audience size, as television and radio do, rather than on circulation guarantees. "I've asked many people, ???How can you do advertising ROI [return on investment] based on circulation metrics?' and I have yet to get a satisfying answer," he told WWD. "To me, it's a disconnect. We are, in a way, segregated by our metrics."

MOVING HOUSE: To go by industry speculation, Cond?© Nast has been on the verge of shutting down House & Garden for several years now. That the magazine keeps producing new issues every month has, of course, helped to dampen such talk. Then came last week's news that House & Garden will, sometime next spring, move out of Cond?© Nast headquarters at 4 Times Square and into one of the company's three other Manhattan locations, at 750 Third Avenue. That building is currently home to Details and the Fairchild Bridal Group, with Jane and W (as well as WWD) moving there later this year. All are part of Fairchild Publications, one of seven divisions under the Cond?© Nast Publications umbrella.

It??™s all in the picture: Taking a closer look at the do??™s, don??™ts, and oh-no-you-didn??™ts of editor??™s letter photography
By Brenda You

http://www.radaronline.com/web-only/media/2005/10/picture-this.php
It??™s the worst day at a magazine: the day the editor in chief has his or her photo taken for the editor??™s letter column. The editor is typically bitchy, but even more so today, because she knows she doesn??™t photograph well. She??™s barking orders louder than usual, upset with herself for looking not like the supermodels and celebrities she puts on her covers but like the dowdy middle-aged woman she actually is. This forces her to take out her frustration on the little people by telling them their stories ???don??™t sing??? as she keeps checking and rechecking her image in the mirror and asking if she needs more Botox. It??™s a loaded question for the yes-men surrounding her. This may be one time when it??™s best to tell her no.

The managing editor is short-tempered too, because the simple ???Click??”it??™s done??? shot that he budgeted for has evolved into a major photo shoot with costs spiraling upward faster than a Michael Bay movie. There??™s a makeup artist, a hairstylist, a clothing stylist, an overinvolved corporate publicist, and a celebrity photographer along with all his assistants, all brought in for a picture that, ultimately, won??™t sell one additional copy of said magazine??”except maybe to the editor??™s family.

Michae; Caruso Can Provide the Next Ex-Wenner ???Ex-Wenner Exec Does good??? Chapter
10/17/05
http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm
This is a saga that dates back at least to year-end 1989, when John Skipper was let go as US publisher. Didn't work for him at what is now Wenner Media, but Skipper is doing just fine as the just-promoted ESPN executive vp/content. FHM president/executive publisher Dana Fields, Esquire vp/publisher Kevin O'Malley, Nickelodeon general manager Dan Sullivan, and retired People managing editor Carol Wallace also left Jann Wenner's/Kent Brownridge's employ (mostly involuntarily) and became more successful. Good pre-cedents for Caruso, whose well-reported departure as Men's Journal editor-in-chief (since November 2003) came in spite of the monthly being up in single-copy sales (+35% in first-half 2005) and ad pages (+12.6% through October). Great results for the Vanity Fair/ Los Angeles magazine/ Details/ Maximum Golf alumnus to add to his r?©sum?©.

Writer defends reporting Wie

PALM DESERT, Calif. ??” Michael Bamberger, a senior writer with Sports Illustrated, watched intently as Michelle Wie took a penalty drop from an unplayable lie during the third round of the Samsung World Championship.

Shortly afterward, he paced off the distance and determined Wie had dropped her ball closer to the hole, a two-stroke penalty. Bamberger's decision to report the incident to a rules official led to Wie's disqualification and put him under scrutiny as to whether he should have acted as an arbiter of that situation.

MTV??™s Miss Seventeen, Your New Religion
10/17/05
http://www.gawker.com/
Last night marked the premiere of MTV??™s latest reality abortion, Miss Seventeen, in which a gaggle of teenaged girltards compete for the approval of Seventeen EIC Atoosa Rubenstein in weekly competitions of character; the winner snags a coveted internship at the legendary girl mag. In short, the summer job you worked your ass off for in college has been reduced to a reality competition for the tween network. Admittedly, we didn??™t watch the damn thing. We had hot drinks to tackle and, honestly, we forgot to set the DVR (as if MTV won??™t rerun the episode 58 times between now and Friday). Thankfully, a vigilant reader emails us with a one-sentence recap that tells you everything you need to know, thanks to the words of one contestant:

???Meeting Atoosa was like meeting Jesus.???
