1. Ad Age
Presenting Media Guy??™s B, B-, C, C-, D, D-, F Lists
By Simon Dumenco
October 19, 2005
http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=46442

Elsewhere in this week??™s issue of Advertising Age you??™ll find the annual ???A-list??? of magazines, which is all very well and good??”but just a bit too exclusive for Media Guy??™s tastes. Away with the velvet rope! Presenting my slightly more inclusive list:

The B-list
Celebrity Hairstyles only comes out four times a year, and that makes me sad. Really, the times we live in demand that CH should be a weekly, at the very least. I know that would be a lot more work for the editors, but as it is, they??™re overthinking the stories??”by which I mean captions??”and if I were running the show, I??™d move it toward more direct, streamlined, relatable captions along the lines of ???Shiny??¦ pretty??¦ want hair like Jessica Simpson??¦ So??¦ pretty!???

The B-minus list
This honor goes to ADDitude, the magazine for people with attention deficit disorder. Mainly because it writes its own jo??”you know, I should really check my e-mail again. Wait, did I remember to buy more cat food? Martha Stewart totally has man-hands.

Hair Balls
As told to Richard Connelly

Two Houston eateries have been chosen to be part of Esquire magazine's "Best New Restaurants" list due out soon, and you can partly thank your tax dollars for that.

The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau paid the airfare of noted Esquire food writer John Mariani. The Hotel Icon comped his room, and the four restaurants he visited paid for his meals, says Lindsey Brown of the GHCVB.

Nice gig if you can get it, man.

ONLINE IDENTITY THEFT: If you happen to log on to Gawker.com and scroll through the comments section in the coming weeks, and run across a posting by "John Huey," don't assume the editor in chief-elect of Time Inc. has taken to airing his observations on the media gossip site.

Chances are those Huey posts are by Graydon Carter.

Gawker instituted an invitation-only comments section late last month, asking a 100 or so bloggers and members of the media to sign up so they could applaud, quibble about or add to items at their leisure. "It covers the gamut," co-editor Jesse Oxfeld said of the original list, "from people's input we would love to have, to people who were funny and would be good at it, to people at various media organizations."

That included, in no particular order, Jake Dobkin and Alex Balk, both bloggers; David Remnick; Bill Keller; Norman Pearlstine ??” and Vanity Fair's editor in chief.
