1. Folio
Despite being announced conspicuously close to the imbroglio over the August 22 New Yorker single-sponsored by Target, and among increasing reports of deterioration of the church-state wall, the American Society of Magazine Editors president and Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker says specific recent events did not necessarily precipitate changes to its editorial guidelines. ASME, the editorial peer and watchdog division of the Magazine Publishers of America, announced updated guidelines October 17 at MPA's annual American Magazine Conference in Puerto Rico. ???We started polling our members in summer 2004,??? says Whitaker. ???There were growing numbers of questions being raised, and there were certainly some new trends and pressures in advertising that weren't addressed properly in the existing guidelines.??? A recent study released by Starcom USA found that 65 percent of consumers believe advertisers pay for editorial mentions. MORE ONLINE 2. FolioHearst to Exit Custom Publishing's Bigger Pool By Dylan Stableford and Bill Mickey 10/19/05 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1306 Despite the industry's renewed interest in custom titles and talk of turning a corner, Hearst is folding its 7-year-old custom publishing unit into the Hearst Group, its integrated sales and marketing division, FOLIO: has learned. The announcement was made internally on Friday (Oct. 14), according to a source familiar with the situation. Hearst began its custom operation in 1998. Michael Hurley, the unit's director and publisher, is leaving the company; Jeff Hamill, SVP of the Hearst Group, will be overseeing the business side. ???Much??? of HCP's existing staff will make the transition, according to a Hearst spokesperson. MORE ONLINE 3. NY PostTrump Gets His Lumps By Keith J. Kelly 10/21/05 http://www.nypost.com/business/53695.htm Bonnie Fuller, the editorial director of American Media, has finally found a replacement for Anne Russell as editor-in-chief of Shape Magazine. Russell resigned after American Media CEO David Pecker announced he was shifting the magazine's main editorial office from Woodland Hills, Calif. to New York and that it had hired a new design director. The editor is going to be Valerie Latona, who had been Shape's beauty editor for the past five years and was one of the few staffers to actually be based in New York. MORE ONLINE 4. WWD.comMemo Pad: Just Like Us By Sara James and Jeff Bercovici 10/19/05 http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1306 Us Weekly's recent cover stories have been fixated on what it characterizes as the definitive split between Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. But now the magazine might not be so sure. Earlier this week, Us' West Coast executive editor, Ken Baker, said on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, "This is a couple that just will separate at every opportunity, and I just have to say that whoever is going to finally get to the bottom of these guys, to get them to step up and say what's happening, to tell the truth, there's really going to be an interesting story for them to tell." So clearly, Us hasn't told it yet. MORE ONLINE 5. Fashion Week DailyThe Exclusive That Wasn't By Jim Shi 10/19/05 http://www.fashionweekdaily.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=254407&itype=8486 Back in September, Bazaar editor in chief Glenda Bailey confirmed to The Daily that her magazine had secured exclusive rights to cover LVMH heiress Delphine Arnault's nuptials to Alessandro Vallrino Gancia. Bailey even missed the last day of the New York shows in order to attend the weekend affair in the South of France. This week, however, Bazaar rival W Magazine ran a two-page feature on Arnault's wedding, looking much like the September 20 story sister publication WWD had run immediately after the event. When asked about the exclusive that wasn't, a Bazaar rep said the magazine was still slated to run coverage of the wedding in the January issue, hitting newsstands on December 20. ???All is scheduled to proceed as normal,??? the spokesperson said. ???The story has not been cancelled, we're very excited for the story, and it's going to be fantastic.??? As it turns out, while LVMH supplied W with photos of the wedding taken by their hired wedding photographer, Bazaar's exclusive might turn out to be not the wedding itself, but its photographer, the revered Karl Lagerfeld. A Fairchild spokesperson said that as far as W knew, Bazaar was not given an exclusive on the wedding. ???How could Bazaar have gotten an exclusive when we had the story in November???? the rep added. MORE ONLINE 6. GawkerIn All Fairness, We Don't Really Know What Aniston Looks Like, Either By Gawker Staff 10/20/05 http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/print/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001264363 NB to the kind folks at People: When creating a photo feature about Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, be sure that it's actually Jennifer Aniston in the pictures and not, as the photo agency captions indicated, Aniston's double. We know, it's confusing. The bitch is like Saddam Hussein. MORE ONLINE 7. GawkerTeam Party Crash (and Burn): Budget-Living Heebs By Gawker Staff 10/20/05 http://www.gawker.com/news/party-crash/team-party-crash-and-burn-budgetliving-heebs-132282.php Last night's party celebrating the new issue of Heeb had all the ingredients of a potentially historic Gawker Team Party Crash: Jews, Media, Sex. It's the Holy Trinity of our existence - and so we decided to send Jewish, mediocre, and undersexed Gawker mascot Andrew Krucoff, along with gentile photog Nikola Tamindzic, to the LES shtetl to document this simcha. It was a bad idea. We'll let Kruc - who had a nice shtick planned, a whole cheap-Jews theme - explain:
Budget Living, the shelter/shopping/lifestyle mag for the heeb in everyone, held its third-anniversary party at the Hotel QT last night, and it presented the perfect, parsimonious warm-up for the evening. You could feel that heat as WWD's Jeff Bercovici was seen running around the joint like a pool boy with a sack of towels on shoulder. Everyone's favorite media lifeguard, Greg Lindsay, offered a quick hi/goodbye and declined to comment on his Mediabistro EIC candidacy. But then we were told this was largely a business-side party, and we don't co-mingle well with ad sales people, so we left. Real fast. MORE ONLINE
