******* Gossip hounds for the likes of Brad and Angelina and Jen and Vince will be feasting this week ??” with Us Weekly providing the most delicious fare. People once dwelled more on ordinary individuals in extraordinary situations but has drifted far from its original formula to float easily in the shallow waters of celebrity worship. Its cover splash is on the dating between Jennifer Aniston and her new boyfriend Vince Vaughn with a bold headline: "Dancing, Kissing & Meeting His Mom . . ." Big news in the celebrity game. People briefly veers off its celeb track with a cover piece on the murder of the wife of TV lawyer Daniel Horowitz, but returns with a story that Brad Pitt has joined Angelina Jolie in taking flying lessons so they don't have to travel with the kids on public airlines. It also reports that "everything's perfect" between Jessica Simpson and hubby Nick Lachey. Us Weekly's cover story, however, claims Jessica and Nick have split because "It's For The Best." Us also runs a cover photo of a slightly pudgy Britney Spears with a headline: "Britney Thin! How She Did It." She did it with a headline in Us. The Jen- and-Vince story also roosts on the Us cover. But the best of Us is its fashion spreads and loads of hot photos and capsules of gossip. A great visual trip ??” what a celeb book should be ??” and a salute to one of the best photos desks around. Execs at Richard Desmond's celebrity-friendly OK! magazine are furious they shelled out a reported $3 million for the photos of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's wedding, only to receive tasteful, black-and-white shots of the ceremony. Deep-pocketed OK! is thought to have given Moore and Kutcher total picture approval, but never expected to be forced to run an unexciting monochrome picture of the couple ??” who are 15 years apart in age ??” on the Oct. 14 cover. A spokesperson denied the arrival of black-and-white pictures was a shock, saying OK! knew what it was getting.
4. Mediaweek
Just weeks after Jon Stewart skewered the industry during a Magazine Publishers of American panel discussion, noting that magazines sat ???at the children??™s table,??? industry executives arrived at this year??™s American Magazine Conference in steamy Fajardo, Puerto Rico to address ways in which the medium could grow up. ???Complacency is not an option,??? proclaimed Jack Kliger, CEO of Hachette Filipacchi Media and MPA chairman, who got the ball rolling. After two days of debates and discussion, publishers were called upon to innovate; executives spoke of the need for more digital and online products; and advertisers wanted more creative ideas from magazines??™ marketing teams that cross over into several mediums. When George Lois addressed the American Magazine Conference last week, he opened the talk by exhibiting his characteristic bluntness. "I'm here," he said, "to talk about your boring, adoring, butt-kissing magazine covers." Bulls-eye! Lois, 74, perfectly summarized the take-no-chances, conformist mentality that pervades so many magazines today. Not surprisingly, Lois was just as insightful in capturing the essence of America when he designed 92 covers for Esquire from 1962 to 1971. MORE ONLINE
6. Women??™s Wear Daily STAYING ON BUDGET: Launch guru Don Welsh can't walk down Sixth Avenue without sparking rumors that he's trying to sell Budget Living. In the past, he has invited Hearst, Meredith, Gruner + Jahr and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia to kick the tires, according to a former employee. "Everyone knows Don's m.o. is to flip," added the source. But that wasn't the reason for his recent visit to Hachette Filipacchi Media, where he gave a presentation to chief executive officer Jack Kliger. Rather, according to Welsh, he was there to discuss teaming up for a newsstand one-shot about budget weddings. "It could happen, or it could never happen," he said. MORE ONLINE
7. Newsday The publisher of a computer magazine and a circulation consultant have been charged with fraudulently conspiring to inflate the magazine's circulation in the first case growing out of a federal investigation into circulation practices in the magazine industry, according to court documents. A mail-fraud arrest warrant was issued in Brooklyn earlier in the week for Edward D. Brown, head of Manhattan-based Bedford Communications, which publishes the computer magazine Laptop. The warrant described the alleged fraud as part of a "conspiracy to generate and report false circulation." MORE ONLINE
8. Washington Post Couldn't wait to read Sports Illustrated this week, to savor senior writer Michael Bamberger's piece on Michelle Wie, whom Bamberger outed to the LPGA for a penalty drop Saturday that was 12 to 18 inches closer to the par-5 seventh hole than her original shot at the Big Horn Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif. On Sunday, after Bamberger notified the LPGA of what he had seen, the LPGA disqualified Wie from her pro debut in the Samsung World Championship, costing her $53,126 and a fourth-place finish. But the magazine included no story about the 16-year-old Wie by Bamberger; rather, there was a congratulatory story by Alan Shipnuck about Bamberger, stating that "third parties -- even reporters -- who point out rules infractions are protecting the field and preserving the integrity of the competition." "Since he'd [Bamberger] become part of the story, we thought it appropriate to have someone else write the piece," said Jim Herre, an assistant managing editor at SI who directs the magazine's golf coverage. Herre said he approved Bamberger reporting Wie's violation to the LPGA, and Shipnuck even ended his story with Wie's father congratulating Bamberger. MORE ONLINE
