******* Primedia Inc. announced late Monday that it is exploring a breakup into two publicly traded separate companies. Primedia also announced that CEO Kelly Conlin has decided to leave the company, effective immediately. In a press release, Primedia said it wants to ???unlock value for shareholders??? by separating the businesses through a tax-free spinoff, where shares would be distributed on a pro rata basis to all shareholders. In the split, the company??™s guides unit would be separated from its enthusiast media and education units. ???PRIMEDIA has made significant progress over the last three years streamlining the business and reducing leverage,??? company chairman Dean Nelson said in the statement. ???We believe the separation of these segments into two distinct businesses is the next logical step in the clarification of our long-term business strategy and that this plan would lead to greater growth opportunities and ultimately enhanced shareholder value.???

Leakers beware. A freelance researcher at Cond?© Nast lost his job yesterday apparently because he leaked internal information to Gawker.com, the dishy Web site that makes fun of just about everything that passes across its screen. Gawker broke the news itself. In a posting yesterday afternoon, it said that Andrew Krucoff, a blogger and freelance research analyst at Cond?© Nast, "was just moments ago fired" for leaking an innocuous internal memo about the magazine company's server being down. 3. Women??™s Wear Daily MANHUNT: Bob Wallace isn??™t the only person who apparently finds Wenner Media a tough place to work. The search is on for a new editor in chief of Men??™s Journal, and, so far, there seems to be little interest in the job. The headhunting firm Howard Sloan Koller has contacted a number of high-level editors about the position, including Runner??™s World editor in chief David Willey, Popular Science editor in chief Mark Jannot, Absolute editor in chief Andrew Essex, Life managing editor Bill Shapiro, Men??™s Health executive editor Peter Moore and Bill Stump, Rodale??™s vice president of editorial development for Rodale. None of those editors, however, is believed to be actively pursuing the position. One source who took himself out of contention explained his decision this way: ???Two words: Jann Wenner. Everyone knows it??™s not really a job where you??™re in charge.??? Another editor, who has not been approached about the Men??™s Journal position but has been a candidate for similar posts, added, ???It??™s like going to work for George Steinbrenner.??? Indeed, whoever ends up taking the job will become Men??™s Journal??™s fifth new editor in six years, following Mark Bryant (now developing a sports magazine for The New York Times), Sid Evans (now editor in chief of Field & Stream), Wallace and Michael Caruso, who left earlier this month as time ran out on his contract. Caruso??™s experience, in particular, highlights why prospective candidates have been so leery: Despite the magazine??™s strong advertising and newsstand gains under his stewardship, Wenner still chose to let him go rather than reward him with a better contract. ???Any smart person??™s not going to take a one-year job,??? said another men??™s magazine editor who has not been approached. 4. Washington Post Don Diva is a magazine that comes with a warning label -- "Parental Advisory: Gangsta Content." The warning is partly a come-on -- nothing attracts kids like a parental-advisory warning -- but it's also accurate. Don Diva is a magazine a bout gangsters that is published for gangsters -- and for wannabe gangsters, imprisoned gangsters and folks who just want to experience the excitement of gangster life without getting shot or going to prison, which is, alas, the fate of most of the gangsters Don Diva profiles. "We're really not an entertainment magazine," says Tiffany Chiles, Don Diva's editor and publisher. "We're really a lifestyle magazine." MORE ONLINE
