Tom Masland: 1950 - 2005
By Newsweek staff

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9841406/site/newsweek/

Newsweek Senior Editor Tom Masland, 55, died today after suffering injuries from an auto accident in New York City. He had worked at Newsweek for 15 years, covering international news and spending several years reporting from the African continent.

Masland joined the Newsweek.com staff as a contributing senior editor in September 2005, after a long career reporting for Newsweek in some of the world's most dangerous places. He joined Newsweek in May 1990 and wrote extensively on Haiti, terrorism in the Middle East and the changing political face of southern and central Africa. Four years later he was a senior writer for the international news section of the magazine and then, in June 1999, was named Africa Regional Editor/South Africa Bureau Chief. He covered the uprising in Liberia in 2003 and became the subject of news himself when he was injured by flying shrapnel from an explosion. Before coming to New York to join the Web site staff, he spent time in early 2005 in the Middle East, covering the war on terror.

???As anyone who has worked with him knows, Tom was a very kind and honorable man in addition to a valued and courageous reporter,??? Newsweek editor Mark Whitaker said. ???He was always there for his colleagues in times of need. Our prayers go out to his wife, Gina, their three children, and Tom's mother and siblings.???

Memo Pad: Ladies' Night
By Jeff Bercovici

http://www.wwd.com/issue/article/102284?page=1

It was a regular orgy of networking at the Four Seasons on Wednesday evening, as a gross or so of women's magazine editors took over the Grill Room for an event hosted by Mediabistro.com. And that does mean took over: When chatter from the bar threatened to drown out a panel discussion featuring six editors in chief, Mediabistro founder and moderator Laurel Touby marched over, and, speaking into her microphone, shushed the pinstriped offenders.

Asked about her career path, Shop Etc.'s Mandi Norwood revealed that she originally had harbored an ambition to be an environmental health officer. "Then I visited an abattoir in the northeast of England and realized I absolutely did not want to be an environmental health officer," she said.

Cosmopolitan's Kate White got an ovation when she inveighed against the late nights at the office that make life hard for editors who are also mothers. "I personally don't think it's necessary," she said. "It's not like being a lawyer. You can do the work after [you've put the kids] to bed."

Where The Boys Aren't
By Jon Fine
10/28/05
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_45/b3958024.htm

This is a tough column to write. It brings up clich?©d assumptions of American males that I've rolled my eyes at for years. (Boys do poorly in school because they're too busy daydreaming about blowing things up; men forget how to read if there's a lighted screen within 100 yards.) But according to new research and top magazine executives, this much is clear: Their medium increasingly skews toward women as men spend less time reading magazines.

???Women's interest in reading did not fall this year," says Ann Moore, chairman and CEO of Time Inc. (TWX ). But "we continue to see you men distracted by other things," she adds with a grin, as if I'm about to dash off to fire up a bunch of bottle rockets or spend hours, jaws clenched, blasting through HALO.

Research from Moore's company, the world's largest magazine publisher, finds a new, noticeable slide in men's magazine usage, while women's usage is holding steady. A mere five years ago there was no gender gap. Time Inc.'s research found that men spend more time with new media than women, which may account for the decline.

Without Anna Wintour, Would There Be a PETA?
By Gawker staff
10/28/05
http://www.gawker.com/news/peta/without-anna-wintour-would-there-be-a-peta-133796.php

We're going to go out on a limb here and just admit that, at this point, we're a little tired of PETA's militant antics. Yes, baby animals are cuddly and precious, and no, we don't think you should kill a kitten in order to have a new collar for your coat. But PETA's relentlessly self-promoting activism is striking us as a little tacky. We only mention our discontent because this morning, like so many others, brings their latest press release:

Wearing Anna Wintour masks and witches' hats and holding signs that read, ???Anna Wintour: Fur Witch,??? dozens of PETA members will mark Halloween by gathering outside the office of the evil Vogue editor at 12 noon tomorrow [today?] to protest her morbid relationship with fur.

And we're sure Wintour will abandon her 2-hour lunch just to stick around and be affected by this moving demonstration.

The Source of Confusion
By Keith J. Kelly
10/28/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/56301.htm

The Source, the floundering bible of the hip-hop industry that has lost more than $11 million over the past four years, has failed to file state and federal income tax for two years and has skipped mailing issues of its magazine as its financial crisis has mounted, a lawsuit filed against it by its principal lender claims.

Top executives have written nearly $3 million in bad checks over the past nine months, the suit claims.

It's all part of a lawsuit filed by one-time principal lender Textron Financial Corp., which loaned the company $18 million and now says The Source has defaulted. Textron is due to be back in New York State Supreme Court Wednesday in a bid to force the company into receivership - a first step toward a takeover and eventual disposal or sale of assets.

As the saying goes, third time's a charm. About six months ago, Ashley Kennedy, then accessories director at Lucky, resigned from the magazine to pursue a life change. A few weeks later, People magazine freelancer Amber Rodriguez joined the Cond?© Nast title, taking Kennedy's position, complete with a welcome bash held on the roof of 60 Thompson. Now comes word that Rodriguez has resigned from Lucky to return to her former haunt, People, where she will now be a freelance accessories market editor working on the newly-expanded Style Watch issues. Senior accessories editor Christine Frey has been promoted to accessories director.

Speculation Swirls: Primedia Selling Pieces, Planning Liquidation
By TONY SILBER
10/27/05
http://www.foliomag.com/index.php?id=396&backPID=392&tt_news=1326

Primedia is in active discussions to sell parts of its 120-magazine enthusiast group, an informed industry observer said today, just days after the company announced that it is exploring splitting itself into two separate public companies.

The enthusiast magazine unit, which is performing poorly so far this year in both revenue and EBITDA, is the main reason for a late-year downward re-forecast of EBITDA that was announced earlier this week.

With the sale in August of the Primedia b-to-b group and the plan to split up the company in the next several months, some magazine-industry observers were speculating this week that a final liquidation of Primedia is now imminent.
