******* In recent years, business magazines' bottom lines have suffered from the fallout of Sept. 11, a prolonged recession and two wars. Advertising across the category has seen a precipitous drop, in large part because of the steep declines in technology and automotive spending. Ad pages for BusinessWeek dropped 11 percent through Oct. 31, to 2,202, reports the Mediaweek Monitor. Fortune??™s pages through Oct. 17 fell 14.2 percent to 2,301; Forbes through Oct. 17 dipped 7.4 percent to 2,468; and pages for Fast Company plunged 21 percent to 434 through November. Making matters worse, business titles??™ circulation experienced some fall off; BusinessWeek, Fast Company and Forbes saw some newsstand softness, while Fortune saw subscriptions slide. However, this year??™s second half may be the turning point. This past spring, Time Inc. and McGraw-Hill Cos. tapped new editors in chief for Fortune and BusinessWeek, respectively. In May, Mansueto Ventures snapped up Fast Company and Inc. from G+J USA Publishing. Then in August, Cond?© Nast formed a business division, which in 2007 will launch a magazine and Web site. PEOPLE CHASE: Lori Majewski's overhaul of Teen People technically won't make its debut until the February issue, but when the December/January cover hits newsstands later this week, don't expect it to look much like the Teen People of recent years. The so-called "top-line" circulation data would consist of both paid and non-paid qualified subscription copies and single copies, taking into account the appropriate subtotals and overall qualified paid/non-paid total. "Because I came from a weekly, I don't want to wait [to make changes], and I can't wait," said Majewski, who was hired from Us Weekly to be managing editor of Teen People in August, with the goal of bringing the magazine back to its roots and realigning it with the People mother ship. ("People is having its best year in 12 years," she said. "Why wouldn't we want to follow that?") The new Teen People cover features fewer cover lines, no more neon and, for the first time posing together for a magazine (according to a Teen People spokeswoman), Ashlee and Jessica Simpson. Not long after Evan Smith became the editor of Texas Monthly in July 2000, he received a note from a former staff writer named Dick J. Reavis. If Smith hoped to get a warm reception, he was sadly mistaken. Reavis contended that the New York-bred Smith was unqualified for the job because he wasn't a real Texan. "He sent me a letter saying, if you want to help the magazine, get on a train and go back to New York!" Smith recalled with a wan laugh when we recently at the American Magazine Conference in Puerto Rico. MORE ONLINE
