Men's Journal Vet Tom Foster Named Editor; Jann Wenner Reinstates His EIC Title
By Lisa Granatstein
11/02/05
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001393826

Tom Foster, until recently the features editor at Rodale's Men's Health, and before that a five-year veteran of Men's Journal, was named editor of the Wenner Media monthly. And Jann Wenner, chairman of Wenner Media and editor in chief of Rolling Stone, has given himself the title of editor in chief after removing himself from the masthead during tenures of Foster predecessors Michael Caruso and Bob Wallace.

"Like Rolling Stone, the vision of Men's Journal truly stems from Jann Wenner," a Men's Journal spokesperson explained. "Only for a brief time in the magazine's history was he not listed as editor in chief. Tom Foster shares this vision, and together they will continue the great momentum of Men's Journal."

Foster becomes the magazine's sixth editor in five years. But perhaps he will have some staying power, since it seems to have been made clear to all concerned that Wenner will have a direct hand in the magazine's editorial direction. Caruso was said to have clashed with Wenner, and complained about the company's "management style." Incoming editors know that Wenner, being the owner, has every right to interfere, or make suggestions, but it still has made seasoned editors bristle.

David Carey's New CN Business Magazine Has At Least 96 Help Wanteds
By Ross Fadner
11/02/05
http://www.minonline.com/topstory.htm

Come Halloween 2006, Carey expects his nascent Cond?© Nast business unit to have 100-plus employees, as by then, he and editor-in-chief Joanne Lipman will be nearing the 2007 launch of the their "project," which will include the yet-to-be-named (and yet-to-be-defined) magazine and Web site. For now, Carey, Lipman, and their two assistants are the staff. Perceived "slow start," says Carey, who ended his seven-year-plus stint as The New Yorker vp/publisher after Labor Day to become the unit's president, is due to Lipman not joining until earlier this month, because she--as Wall Street Journal deputy editor--guided the launch of the newspaper's weekend edition. Carey tells min he is interviewing at least two candidates a day for top sales/marketing/circulation positions, and Lipman will be doing the same editorially. "Neither of us has ever established a culture from scratch," he says. "I'm looking forward to it."

As president, Carey is the hierarchical equal to Fairchild Publications president (since November 1999) Mary Berner and Golf DigestCos. president (since February 2001) Mitch Fox in reporting to CNpresident/ceo (since January 2004) Chuck Townsend. "I don't yet see it that way because I have to produce a product," says Carey. "Further, Mary and Mitch have a lot more than four employees."

Hip-Hop Bible's Unfinished Business
By Staff
11/02/05
http://www.radarmagazine.com/fresh-intelligence/2005/11/02/index.php#report_003884

For months, staffers and visitors to the West 23rd Street offices of hip-hop bible The Source have had to step gingerly through a construction site. Now, it appears that the mag, whose masthead mingles in the same elevator as Radar's, situated a few floors above, is having trouble coming up with the rent-reportedly overdue to the tune of $156,000. All in all, it's been rough going lately for our friends downstairs; last Wednesday, Source Editor-in-Chief Dasun Allah turned himself in to police after he was caught tagging a Jehovah's Witness Assembly Hall in Harlem. But even more troubling to the monthly's loyalists must be seeing November cover-target G-Unit's fashion label open up posh new offices in the same building. Produced in partnership with Marc Ecko's Ecko Unlimited street-style empire, the outfit's sleek headquarters are chock full of chrome, black leather Barcelona chairs and flat-screen TVs.

The temperature in the building has dropped noticeably since the latest issue of The Source hit stands with a cover story headlined ???G-Unot!???-a shout-out to 50-Cent rival The Game's t-shirt campaign that, according to the mag, is burning up the streets of Queens. A no-holds-barred attack on 50, his rhyming crew, and the ???plantation owners??? at Interscope, the article claims that ???corporate rap's top unit??? is ???fading fast.???

It's time for magazines' parlor games
By Jon Friedman
11/02/05
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4377968.stm

It's that time of year again. Leaves are turning colors. Everyone is making plans for Thanksgiving dinners and holiday shopping. Meanwhile, media junkies are busy, too.

We're beginning to contemplate our favorite, end-of-the-year parlor game: guessing who will win the newsweeklies' annual awards. Time has the "Person of the Year" franchise (looking back on 2005), and Newsweek answers with its "Who's Next" issue (glimpsing into 2006).

Time will hold a lunch on Nov. 14 to discuss the contenders. The Time Warner property promotes the POY in the spirit of the Oscars extravaganza -- minus, of course, the gowns, the jewels and (thankfully) Joan Rivers screeching on the red carpet.
