******* The December issue of Vibe magazine features a cover story on Mary J. Blige, "the Queen of Hip Hop Soul," in which her highness confides, "People connect to the honesty and imperfection in my music because life isn't perfect." Imperfect in quotes, too, it seems. Check out the pics of Hurricane Katrina's aftermath, and the feature on Carlos Santana, who advises us "to care about people, be spiritual, and appreciate good music ??” regardless of genre." The Source looks like it's trying to throw a few more punches before financial woes force it into extinction. This month's cover story ??” "G-Unot: Is Corporate Rap's Top Unit Fading Fast?" ??” takes aim at millionaire rapper Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent. The story reads like a career obit for Jackson and his lucrative G-Unit franchise. XXL, less wordy and flashier than its troubled competitor, gives us an eye-catching feature on a former Brooklyn stripper named Remy Red. She's a good girl now, XXL tells us. If you're into chuckling at the follies of gangsta rappers, check out the Q&A with Black Rob. The self-proclaimed thief delves into why he recently got arrested for stealing jewelry in a hotel. He was high, blacked out, stole the loot, fell asleep in the room and got busted. From perp to pep, the cover story examines how New Orleans rapper Juvenile, who lost his house during Katrina, was driven to reconstruct his entire community. MORE ONLINE

Fashion fight! Some Vogue advertisers are on the verge of revolt against associate publisher Connie Anne Phillips, citing her aggressiveness, sources say. Things have been so bad, according to a source, Cond?© Nast had to send her to anger management ??” a distinction she shares with the mag's other associate publisher. MORE ONLINE

Earlier this year, the feminist writer Susan Estrich said that women's bylines appeared far less frequently than men's on newspaper opinion pages like those of The Los Angeles Times. Now, a Cond?© Nast editor is making a similar case against several of publishing's top general-interest magazines - including some owned by Cond?© Nast. Ruth Davis Konigsberg, a deputy editor at Glamour, began counting bylines in Harper's, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair and The Atlantic Monthly. Since the beginning of September, she has tallied 324 male bylines and 99 female ones. She has displayed the results on a Web site, www.womenTK.com. "It started as a personal pet peeve, and I thought that someone should really be keeping track of it," she said, adding that the Web site was unrelated to her job at Glamour. MORE ONLINE

The father of journalist Peter Braunstein - the prime suspect in the phony-firefighter Halloween sex attack - urged his son to turn himself in yesterday. "He's disturbed and he needs help badly," gallery owner Alberto Braunstein told the Daily News. "I want to believe he's not guilty, but you have to be deeply disturbed to do what he's done." "I can't believe it, yet I must believe it," said Braunstein, who has been estranged from his son for two years. "This is not the first time he's had problems." MORE ONLINE

Any trainer worth her salt knows that adding some variety to a workout routine and sometimes even changing it altogether, will keep participants motivated and interested enough to see it through. But only in recent months, it seems, have women??™s fitness magazines realized the same rules apply to them. For years, fitness magazines have stuck to formulaic coverage and similar covers, but now that may be about to change. Top editorial changes and pending redesigns at Shape and Fitness, as well as the introduction of Rodale??™s Women??™s Health, promise to help shake up the sleepy category. Fitness is finding its footing after a year in flux through three publishers and a new owner. In May, Meredith Corp. acquired Fitness from G+J USA Publishing and tapped two top executives to lead a turnaround. Former More publisher Lauren Buerger replaced Katherine Rizzuto, and Men??™s Health founding editor Mike Lafavore was named editorial director, with Fitness editor Emily Listfield reporting to him. Last week, about 35,000 to 40,000 people prepared to run the New York marathon before a live television audience and Runner's World seemed ready to embrace every single one of them. "This is our 'Tour de France' week," he said, referring to the race that dominates the cycling industry. To show its support for the marathon, for instance, the magazine is sponsoring such events as "Heroes of Running," toasting 400 guests at a gala. They ranged from disabled runners to military veterans to a woman who collects used sneakers and distributes them to needy people in Africa. MORE ONLINE

PREMATURE EXPOSURE: Here's a great way to make sure that exclusive celebrity photo shoot you've spent months lining up doesn't stay exclusive: Hold it on the beach just off Santa Monica pier. The locale, which is part of the world's most paparazzi-infested stretch of sand, was where Ellegirl chose to shoot Nicole Richie for its March cover. No sooner had photographer Viki Forshee set up than lensmen from the X17 photo agency began circling. Though the magazine had hired security for the shoot, the decision was made not to chase the intruders off, for a simple reason. "She was loving it," said Ellegirl's new editor in chief, Christina Kelly, of Richie. "Her face lit up." As a result, pictures from the shoot are on prominent display in this week's celebrity tabloids, including In Touch and Life & Style (which credited Ellegirl) and Star (which didn't). Kelly, whose first issue hits newsstands on Tuesday, said, "It's still going to be a great cover ??” just a little less special now." A FITTING CONCLUSION: Kate Moss won't be appearing in H&M ads anytime soon, but she can be seen modeling the retailer's clothes in the new issue of V magazine. Moss was all set to star in the campaign for Stella McCartney's collaboration with H&M when London's Daily Mirror published photos of her snorting cocaine, causing several advertisers, including H&M, to drop her. The pictures in V are Polaroids that McCartney took of Moss at a fitting shortly before the scandal erupted. "For better or worse, we still think Kate looks great," reads the text. MORE ONLINE
