The Devil You Know, On Line One

Although head Vogue-ette Anna Wintour has previously made light of her ex-assistant Lauren Weisberger's best-selling roman a clef, we hear the Devil may care after all. Sources say Wintour has been doing everything in her power to ensure the film version of The Devil Wears Prada fizzles-even threatening to blacklist some of the fashion world's biggest names if they agree to do cameos.

When Wintour got wind that producers had been recruiting major designers for walk-on roles, sources close to the film say she unleashed a flurry of phone calls intimating to the aspiring thespians that they'd be persona non grata in the pages of her high-end glossy if they participated.

Most of the designers bowed out, we hear, with the notable exception of Valentino-who made good on his promised cameo despite having born the brunt of Wintour's discontent. (A rep for Valentino said she was unable to comment on his partcipation in the film or the drama we hear it caused at his offices.)

In ???Esquire,??? Bill Clinton Goes from ???Impeached??? to ???Best & Brightest???
By Steve Cohn

http://www.minonline.com/mb_topstory.htm

There was no Best & Brightest at Esquire in December 2000, when editor-in-chief (since June 1997) David Granger put Clinton on the cover as the 42nd president was completing a tumultuous second term. Good thing...because Clinton was hardly that after his presi?¬dency was nearly destroyed (House impeachment/Senate acquittal) by his lying to special prosecutor Ken Starr about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. The smug and regal Clinton was the perfect depiction for the time, and the December Esquire was 2000's best-seller (left).

Five years later, it is a much different Clinton doing an Esquire reprise (right). Physically, due to his open-heart surgery, "he has aged a decade in the past year," writes Joe Conason in the December 2005 cover story. But the goodwill created by Clinton in launching his Global Initiative to combat hiv and aids, plus his travels worldwide to offer support to victims of earthquakes/hurricanes/tsu?¬namis, made his "post-presi?¬dency," per Conason, "one of moral urgency." Thus, the Bill Clinton of 2005 is the centerpiece to Best & Brightest, a series begun by Granger in December 2002 to honor the achievements by mostly unknowns. Some, like 2002 selections Bill Frist (Senate majority leader) and Theo Epstein (recently resigned general manager of the Boston Red Sox), got famous later on. With Clinton--who wrote the 2002 introduction to the series--"famous" is no problem.

Racist Ranters Race
By Keith J. Kelly

THE teenage white supremacist twins, Lynx and Lamb Gaede, have gone into hiding after their controversial ABC special on Oct. 20 portrayed the blue-eyed Olsen lookalikes as racist ranters.

But Teen People, edited by Lori Majewski, has apparently scored an exclusive interview with the controversial duet. The twins have a band called Prussian Blue, are popular at neo-Nazi events and have been praised by one-time Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke. Lamb has been quoted as saying: "Men like Adolf Hitler and Rudolf Hess are our heroes."

It was a battle between the teen magazines, and at least one rival is claiming Teen People is bending some journalistic rules to reel in the 13-year-old twins. It seems Elle Girl, which is edited by Christina Kelly, was originally going to do the story.

Inside TV was a latecomer to the celebrity weekly craze, and it has struggled to find an audience since its introduction in April, selling fewer than 200,000 copies per issue. Now comes evidence that its parent company, TV Guide, already is having second thoughts.

Sarah Pyper, a former high-level editor at Us Weekly and In Touch, recently began work as a consultant for TV Guide and Inside TV. Officially, she is working on special projects under the direction of TV Guide editor in chief Ian Birch, according to a spokeswoman. But sources close to Pyper say her involvement appears to be centered on Inside TV, where she has been working closely with the editorial staff. Two veterans of the celebrity magazine world said they understood Pyper is overseeing a revamp of the title, which is to be rolled out shortly after Thanksgiving. That timing would correspond with a planned 25-cent price promotion scheduled to begin Dec. 8.

Sources said the new Inside TV likely would incorporate more celebrity-inspired fashion, shopping and relationship editorial and less tabloid-style news and gossip. If so, that would be consistent with a growing consensus among weekly editors that the gossip market is unsustainably overcrowded.
