******* WHILE most of the pack of celebrity magazines have been having a brutal late summer and fall, the No. 1 title in the field, People, with Martha Nelson at the helm, appears to be on a particularly strong roll. Its cover story with Jennifer Aniston breaking her silence sold 1.9 million copies on newsstands - even though it was a pick-up from a Vanity Fair cover story. (It also ended up being Vanity Fair's top-selling issue.) Insiders said it created some chill between People and Vanity Fair because VF said the story was not attributed to them on the cover, although it was mentioned inside. People's cover on the late ABC anchor Peter Jennings sold over 1.7 million copies. So far in the second half of the year, People has been averaging about 1.55 million copies sold each week with five issues selling more than 1.6 million copies at newsstand. People in the first half of the year was averaging 1,485,038 copies on newsstands which was up 2.5 percent. A mini blood bath at the magazine on Wednesday saw six people go, including creative director Jan de Charbert, executive fashion and beauty director Michaela angela Davis and Internet Editor Ingrid Sur gis. A spokeswoman said, "organizational changes occurred in the editorial department as part of a restructuring." She declined further comment. MORE ONLINE
2. New York Post
Phony-fireman suspect Peter Braunstein wrote a chilling preview of his alleged sex attack on a former co-worker - plotting out on his computer a scenario that almost perfectly matched the home-invasion crime committed by a costumed creep in Chelsea, police sources said. The step-by-step walk-through was discovered by cops after a computer was seized from the former Women's Wear Daily writer when he was busted earlier this year, the sources said. The arrest was for menacing an ex-girlfriend, who worked with him at the fashion trade paper. The perverted plot became the first solid link between Braunstein and the bizarre Halloween sex assault, in which a 34-year-old Chelsea woman was gassed, bound with duct tape, stripped naked and molested. The attacker dressed like a firefighter and planted smoke bombs as a ruse to get into her home. MORE ONLINE 3. Women's Wear DailyMemo Pad: Deadwood Piece Killed By Sara James November 11, 2005 http://wwd.com/issue/article/102563?page=0 In the oddest footnote yet to The New York Times' post-Jayson Blair/Judith Miller credibility saga, editors at the Times Magazine recently scrapped a piece by author J.T. LeRoy over concerns he may not exist. LeRoy was first commissioned by the Times to write about Disneyland Paris for the Sept. 25 edition of T: Travel Magazine. After the story was published, his editors encouraged him to keep writing for the section. LeRoy proposed a piece on "Deadwood," the gritty HBO western, and what he called the "Deadwood" state of mind. He pointed to Vera Wang's spring collection - which was inspired by the series - and increased tourism travel to Deadwood, S.D. Since LeRoy was also working with the show's creators to write an episode for the third season, he had unique access and perspective. The Times accepted the pitch, and agreed to pay him $2,700 for the story, plus expenses. To illustrate the story, models were photographed in "Deadwood" costumes on the show's set. LeRoy turned in a draft and subsequent revisions requested by his editor. MORE ONLINE
