******* The Inside TV staff knew they were in trouble a month ago, when Gemstar CEO John Loughlin left his position for a new role at Hearst. Loughlin was known to be Inside TV??™s biggest supporter, but left its parent company to succeed Mark Miller as executive vice president and general manager of Hearst Magazines. This morning at 9 am, fears were confirmed: after being called into a meeting, the staff of nearly 50 reporters and editors were told the new magazine had wrapped. An Inside TV staffer describes the mood as ???devastating,??? noting most of the employees were hired away from other magazines, and took a gamble with the new venture that celebrated all things TV. They were apparently given a ???less than stellar??? severance package for their time. Besides Loughlin??™s departure, company sources tell The Daily that low circulation numbers also contributed to the magazine??™s demise, as did friction between editor-in-chief Steve LeGrice (best known for his executive editor years at InTouch) and Ian Birch, the British import who directed addictive tabloids Heat and Closer before landing stateside to take over TV Guide. ************ ... that MarketWatch from Dow Jones (www.marketwatch.com) is looking for an assistant to Marshall Loeb. The intern is responsible for writing daily money tips, drafting weekly radio scripts and helping Loeb research his columns. The job is also part administrative - you'll be answering his phone and keeping his appointment book. BA in journalism preferred, but they'll accept current students with outstanding experience. Responsibilities include assisting with site production and design, and there is some opportunity for writing blog items. Candidates with some basic HTML, Photoshop and/or video editing skills are preferred. Experience working with Flash is a plus. This is a working internship--you won't spend your time fetching coffee. The positions are PAID and last for 6 months starting in January of 2006. Interns will be responsible for researching, reporting, and writing for the magazine's front-of-book sections and will likely walk away with TONS of CLIPS. Many past interns have gone on to have full time jobs in the magazine industry. The ideal candidate will possess: a bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or English; previous editorial experience; an interest in service journalism; and a great sense of humor. Candidate will be someone who is interested in the magazine business and understands that there is something to be learned from every task. Intern responsibilities include; assisting with scanning and trafficking art, photo research and administrative duties, among other tasks and projects. Design is possible. Candidate MUST possess a thorough knowledge of QuarkXPress, PhotoShop and scanning software on a MAC platform. Only qualified candidates need apply. Position is 3 days a week. Internship is unpaid.
