Stone Thrown
By Keith J. Kelly

Kent Brownridge, the colorful and controversial partner to Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, is stepping down from Wenner Media after 31 years. His last day as general manager ??” a title he has fashioned into a powerful No. 2 position in an empire said to be grossing more than $325 million a year??”will come in right after his boss celebrates his 60th birthday on Jan. 7

Where Wenner was the creative and sometimes overly meddling side of the editorial formula, Brownridge was the hardnosed businessman who kept tabs on manufacturing, distribution and circulation.

"He's incredibly frugal," said one source close to the company, "but he keeps the trains running on time." Added the insider: "He's the only one saving the company from complete and utter madness." Brownridge was seen as a trusted adviser who helped Wenner move the corporate headquarters to New York, build circulation on the flagship Rolling Stone, start Men's Journal and buy Us, then a monthly.

Memo Pad: Bullet Richochets
By Jeff Bercovici

American men may end up getting a weekly lad magazine after all. Keith Blanchard, the former Maxim editor in chief who spent several months developing a prototype of a magazine called Bullet for Hearst earlier this year, has relocated to Bauer Publishing. The New Jersey-based company is home to a number of low-cost, newsstand-driven weeklies, including In Touch and Woman's World. Sources close to Blanchard say Bauer hired him to create a Bullet-like product, a title loosely modeled on the British publications Nuts and Zoo. Working with him on the project is Charles Coxe, who served as Maxim's executive editor under both Blanchard and current editor in chief Ed Needham. Neither Blanchard nor Coxe responded to calls for comment.

Of course, just because Bauer is considering starting a men's weekly doesn't mean it will see the concept through. Besides Hearst, Time Inc. (which owns Nuts through its U.K. subsidiary, IPC) and Emap (which publishes Zoo in the U.K. and FHM in both countries) both have looked into the idea, only to conclude the challenges are too great. One is content: Nuts and Zoo rely largely on nudity and graphic accident photos to keep readers coming back to newsstands week after week. Few think that would fly with conservative American retailers such as Wal-Mart and Kroger.

On the other hand, the monthly lad titles sell a high percentage of their copies at convenience stores, which are less fussy. A bigger hurdle perhaps is that the magazines would be newsstand-driven and most newsstand shoppers in the U.S. are women, not men.

STRANGE DAYS AT HIGH TIMES
By Scott Indrisek

It's not that I'm a puritan, it's just that I can't find it in me to rhapsodize about well-wrought bongs. The scent of fresh bud doesn't set my heart aflutter, and sometimes (I'll admit) the phrase "marijuana culture" sends my oxymoron detector into the red. All of which made me an odd choice to fill the position of assistant editor at High Times, America's oldest and most respected bastion of all things dank, green and illegal.

A year ago, new investors took the bud out of High Times, replacing the familiar lush green photo spreads with tripe about the counterculture at large. "It was a traditional liberal-leftie thing," my boss assured me. "Like Harper's."

They had tampered with an old formula in which High Times is to pot as Playboy is to naked chicks. Consider the "bud centerfold," or the offhanded way readers refer to their growing plants as "little girls." Onanistic fantasies about women (however airbrushed and bleach-blonde) fall somewhere in the vaguely depressing category. Quasi-sexual longing for dewy, moist marijuana plants is just plain creepy.
