******* TOM Moloney, the head of British publishing giant Emap, was in to see Hearst magazine President Cathie Black recently. He's exploring either a joint venture or an outright sale of the American version of FHM [For Him Magazine], its bawdy lad magazine, sources say. Emap is finding it expensive to keep the title going here as a standalone. The company stormed into the United States in 1999 with its buyout of the old Petersen Publishing operation for $1.2 billion but then bailed out and was forced to sell in a fire sale to Primedia. At the time, it hung onto FHM as its sole remaining title in the U.S. primarily because FHM was already a strong title back in merry England and keeping a footprint here seemed like a good idea at the time. It's a buyer's market for shopping magazines. According to sources, Ziff Davis Media is looking to unload Sync, its two-year-old title for gadget-loving men. Cond?© Nast Publications (parent of WWD) and Hachette Filipacchi Media are among the companies that have been approached. Although newsstand sales have been climbing, a source with knowledge of the talks said Willis Stein & Partners, which owns Ziff Davis, is expecting to sell the company next year and is trying to improve its balance sheet by eliminating any money-losing properties. After all the stink we made about uber-editor Jane Pratt leaving Jane and being replaced by Brandon Holley, we still didn't really care enough to follow up and see how the ???new??? Jane would look (adult ADD, man). So we picked up the January issue the other day, and maybe it's too soon to tell, but we're not detecting any major differences, other than wee aesthetic ones, under Holley's reign. We did, however, notice an interesting little sidebar on the letters page, which was for the November issue (and Pratt's last). MORE ONLINE *******
