Ziff Davis Plans to Close Sync Magazine
By Julie Bosman

Sync magazine, a men's magazine devoted to electronic gear and gadgetry, will close after 18 months of publication, a spokesman for its parent company, Ziff Davis Media, said yesterday. The final issue will be on newsstands Dec. 6.

The magazine's approximately 20 employees will be laid off or transferred to other units of the company, a spokesman for Ziff Davis, Randy Zane, said. These include the magazine's editor, Tony Romando, and its publisher, Robert Lee.

Ziff Davis will turn over operation of the magazine's Web site, www.syncmag.com, to its San Francisco-based Game Group, which oversees the company's gaming titles.

Celebrity Mags Begin Shakeout
By Stephanie D. Smith

Over the past decade, several magazine categories, including teen, laddie men??™s books and technology, have experienced a gold rush of new titles only to be followed by a shakeout of superfluous ones.

Now it seems, with the demise last week of Gemstar-TV Guide International??™s Inside TV, celebrity weeklies are the latest genre that may face the same fate. While the category has doubled in size in just a year, to eight, the second wave focusing on lifestyle are barely registering the same newsstand success as Bauer Publishing??™s In Touch, Wenner Media??™s Us Weekly, Time Inc.??™s People and American Media Inc.??™s Star. Moreover, at least one publisher recently shelved plans to launch a celebrity lifestyle title believing the category is overcrowded. ???We had a discussion about this when there were four books in the space,??? acknowledged Kent Brownridge, outgoing Wenner senior vp, general manager. ???But we??™re not now.???

And Wenner is not alone in its assessment that the category is too bloated. Media executives last week said what happened to Inside TV may be a sign of what??™s to come.

AVID MARIA: If the thought of purchasing a house from a prominent publishing scion seems ridiculously out of reach, it's not.

Maria Rodale, vice chairman of Rodale Inc., the wellness-oriented publishing company started by J.I. Rodale in 1930, has put her Pennsylvania home on the market. The five-bedroom, 5,000-square-foot house was listed at $525,000 in last Thursday's special Homes advertising supplement to The New York Times. But two days before, the price had been reduced nearly 15 percent, to $450,000.

Why the markdown? The address is, after all, in Emmaus, Pa. Rodale also is said to be eager to sell, and evidently is ready to move into a new, eco-friendly home in the area.

SYNC SINKS: After a last-ditch effort to sell Sync (reported Friday in WWD), Ziff Davis Media has ended publication of the two-year-old gadget magazine for men. The December/January issue will be the last. A spokesman denied that the decision had anything to do with Ziff Davis owner Willis Stein & Partners' rumored plan to sell the company in 2006.

Scandals don??™t deter students
By Peter Johnson

In the 1970s, Watergate scandal reporting by The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein prompted a generation of students to enter journalism.

Last week, a new generation of students saw Woodward attacked for withholding his part in the CIA leak probe and for perhaps being too chummy with sources ??” a charge also leveled against New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who quit amid questions about her reporting.

These budding on-campus journalists have seen the Times, USA TODAY and CBS News rocked by reporting scandals. They've seen polls that show public esteem for the media is at an all-time low. Newspaper layoffs are so routine that some keep lists shared with other would-be reporters.

Fashionable new look for S.F. magazine
Under Modern Luxury, monthly is sleek and easy on the eye -- but will it lose its edge?

By Dan Fost

San Francisco magazine has already proven it has brains. Now it wants to have beauty as well.

Much like the models so lovingly photographed in its newly redesigned pages, San Francisco magazine has dressed itself to the nines.

The stunning new look of the monthly mag, with its large format, lush photos and pages upon pages of glitzy high-end advertisements, represents a big bet. Can award-winning journalism coexist in the same pages as coverage of fancy fashions and society parties?

The die was cast for the new magazine in April, when Modern Luxury Magazines added San Francisco to its stable of glossy publications, such as Angeleno and Riviera in Southern California and CS in Chicago. San Francisco represents a departure for Modern Luxury, in that San Francisco's journalism has won numerous awards, including two turns as a finalist for a prestigious National Magazine Award, while Modern Luxury books typically devote themselves to the more fashionable side of life.
