******* WASHINGTON -- Hugh Sidey, whose personal portraits of America's chief executives appeared in Time magazine's "The Presidency" column over four decades, died Monday. He was 78. His brother, Ed Sidey, said other relatives told him that Sidey had suffered a heart attack in Paris. He lived in suburban Potomac, Md. Sidey, who served as Time's White House correspondent and its Washington bureau chief, wrote "The Presidency" from 1966 to 1996. He was a contributing editor to the newsweekly at the time of his death. MORE ONLINE

A lament that we have heard from veteran publishers is that selling advertising "isn't fun anymore," and 2005 proved their point. This was a year where the trends seemed to change by the day, with economic ups and downs, a war in Iraq that produced good news (Iraqi constitution and elections) and bad (more American dead), and the devastation from Hurricane Katrina that generated high energy prices--but maybe only for the short term. Thus, unlike 2001, which was terrible throughout, and 2004, which was terrific after the first quarter, it was very hard to get a fix on 2005. Yet the year finished +1.10%, and the December differential was a surprising +2.53% (versus December 2004's +4.85%) in spite of the Katrina fears that has helped slow automotive spending. Here's the quarterly timeline.

Say what you want about the sorry state of the mass media in these troubled times, but you've got to give credit to America's magazines: They're not afraid to ask the tough questions, the important questions, the cosmic questions that have perplexed the great sages of the ages. And they're not afraid to put those questions right on their covers for all to see: What is spacetime? Will Humans Last Another 10,000 Years? Who's naughtier in bed: men or women? Glance at a newsstand and you'll see so many magazine covers asking so many scintillating questions that you despair, knowing you'll never have the time to learn all the answers. But you're in luck: The Magazine Reader staff has collected and digested these magazines and now, as a public service, we will reveal the best of these cover questions -- and the answers worse."
