Ready, Set ??” Shop!
11/28/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/58472.htm

For shopping addicts, there's no time like the holidays to take advantage of great deals on everything from shearling jackets to stiletto heels, and no better place to start looking than the shopping magazines.

Shop Etc.'s holiday issue has everything a shopaholic needs, including confessions from celebrity shopaholic Paris Hilton. The hotel heiress' Christmas wish list includes a $500 "toyger" ??” a cat bred to look like a tiger. Guess all those muskrats and monkeys weren't enough to keep her heiress happy. There are also 40 of the best party dresses, ranging in price from $62 to $4,895, and grown-up hair accessories that do actually look rather stylish.

Lucky's 16-page gift guide takes some of the guess work out of holiday shopping. Whether it's a gold filigree cuff ($135, Isharya.com), or a sari-print silk robe ($98, Anthropologie), these items are not run of the mill. Panicked about how to look stylish at holiday parties? Lucky offers advice from three New Yorkers, including how to dress up jeans with glam accessories and focus on one piece of knockout jewelry.

Second Time reporter to testify in CIA leak case

A second Time magazine reporter has been asked by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald to testify in the CIA leak investigation, the magazine disclosed in its December 5 issue.

Viveca Novak, who covered the inquiry into the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's cover for Time, has been asked to testify under oath about her conversations starting in May 2004 with Robert Luskin, attorney for White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, Time said.

Plame's cover at the CIA was blown after her husband, former diplomat Joseph Wilson, accused the Bush administration of twisting prewar intelligence to support invading Iraq. Wilson said it was done to undercut his credibility.

LOS ANGELES, I'M YOURS: Paper is not a city magazine per se, but it's easy to forget that, so strongly identified is it with New York's various subcultures. Still, the title has plenty of readers outside the five boroughs, the largest chunk of them clustered in that other coastal media capital, Los Angeles. To give them their due, Paper is flying a menagerie of editors, writers, stylists, photographers and scenesters to L.A. next month, where they will spend five days hosting a marathon of parties, performances and competitions ??” and all while supposedly producing the February issue, which will be dedicated to the city.

QUICK'S SLOW START: Evidence that the market for women's weeklies is overtaxed continues to pile up. Sales of Quick & Simple, a new low-priced service title introduced earlier this year by Hearst, have fallen off considerably since the book went weekly at the end of September. According to projections supplied by an industry source drawn from a large sample of the title's market, Quick & Simple, which retails for $1.49, has sold an average of approximately 70,000 to 80,000 copies per week since the frequency shift. Divided by the magazine's print order of 500,000 copies, that yields a sell-through rate of only about 15 percent ??” far below the industry average of 34 percent. A Hearst spokeswoman disputed the accuracy of the figures, but declined to say where the company's own projections put Quick & Simple's sales. Meanwhile, All You and For Me, new low-priced women's service titles from Time Inc. and Hachette Filipacchi, respectively, have also been met with weaker-than-anticipated consumer demand.

HOT MAMAS: Is Maxim finally growing up? In November, Nicollette Sheridan became the Dennis Publishing-owned lad title's oldest cover girl, appearing on newsstands just in time for her 42nd birthday. Maxim follows that up in its December issue with Cindy Crawford, who turns 40 in February. Crawford, who notes in the interview that she is old enough to be Prince William's mother, is Maxim's oldest cover model since Gina Gershon appeared in October 2003. Has editor in chief Ed Needham developed a sudden new appreciation for the charms of the well-seasoned hottie? Apparently not: On Maxim's January cover, according to a source, is Haylie Duff, age 20. "Guess they're trying to average it out," said the source. "Or save money on airbrushing bills."

Rolling Stone Is Going 3-D for No. 1,000
By Katharine Q. Seelye

Rolling Stone, which produced the best magazine cover of the last 40 years, as judged by its peers, is already working on its cover for May 2006.

The date may seem far away, even for a business noted for its long lead times. But that month is special in Rolling Stone's history: the magazine's 1,000th issue.

For the occasion, Wenner Media is planning what appears to be a first for the magazine: a cover in 3-D.

Mag tells 'Nazi' singers: Heil, no!
By BILL HAMMOND and NANCY DILLON
11/23/05
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/368373p-313337c.html

Teen People nixed a story about Hitler-loving teenybopper twins Prussian Blue - amid outrage that the glossy had promised to avoid the words "hate," "supremacist" and "Nazi" in its piece on the racist singing sisters.

A Web-based teaser for the February story originally called the hatemongering duo "aspiring musicians" and compared them to wide-eyed sensations Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

The only hint that 13-year-old Lynx and Lamb Gaede praise Hitler, call the Holocaust an "exaggeration" and count former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke among their fans was a watered-down description of their message as "white pride."
