******* (NEW YORK) ???I didn't make the issue to make Kate happy. I made it to be a beautiful one.??? To hear editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld tell her side in creating the December issue of French Vogue, with guest editor Kate Moss, is to think all the world's photographers wanted to participate. And far be it from her to stop them. ???Everyone wants to photograph Kate,??? Roitfeld noted. ???I didn't want to make anyone jealous. I'm a fashion girl, not a business girl.??? Roitfeld, in an interview from Los Angeles, said that her Dec. issue, which hits newsstands in the next week and was shot entirely in New York, was originally planned as four covers. The catch? ???David Sims, Craig McDean, Mario Sorrenti, and Mario Testino were each supposed to shoot one cover and do a story with Kate inside,??? she said. ???But Kate basically disappeared for a month after only Craig had shot her, so we had to go with four of his shots.??? In fact, had the project gone forward as planned, the McDean shot that would have actually achieved cover status would've been the one that featured Moss in the Dior Homme jacket and Superfine jeans. As a result of having to check into rehab, the issue, as Fabien Baron mentioned yesterday in an interview with The Daily, was altered slightly. Roitfeld also noted several changes that occurred as a result. One story, for example, had Moss in all spring 2006 clothing that she herself chose and would wear out and about, whether to a black-tie or to the park. The Vogue team wanted to play off of the fact that women everywhere emulate Moss's style, and through this story, these women would be able to get an advanced look at Moss' spring style. ???Kate is not a model for me; she's an icon,??? Roitfeld admitted. ???She's like the new Marilyn Monroe.??? A planned story incorporating two of Moss' favorite artists, Dinos and Jake Chapman, did make it into the issue. MORE ONLINE

PUBLISHING sources are buzzing about a proposal for a new novel in which the main character bears an uncanny resemblance to Jane Pratt, the founder and former editor of Jane magazine. In the novel, which has the working title "Wunderkind," the editor-in-chief is called Jill White and the publication is Jill magazine. Jill the character is forced to do battle with a female CEO who installs her bridesmaid as the publisher of the magazine. The proposal being circulated by agent Frank Weimann at the Literary Group was written by Karen Cohen Yampolsky, who was a long-term assistant to Jane Pratt the person at Jane. But unlike Lauren Weisberger, a former assistant to Anna Wintour at Vogue, who parlayed her time there into the best-selling roman a clef "The Devil Wears Prada," Yampolsky's proposal casts the Pratt-like character as a heroine. POACHING GOOD EGGS: Nowhere does the old adage "good help is hard to find" apply more than in the media world, where underlings go on to pen tell-all romans ? clef, and seasoned editors frequently decamp to competing titles. But the hardest position to keep filled seems to be the role of executive assistant. The most interesting game of musical assistants of late? Ann Armstrong, the former personal assistant to Martha Stewart, who had to testify at her boss' trial following Stewart's sale of her ImClone stock, was just hired by Stephen Drucker, the new editor in chief of House Beautiful. Armstrong starts on Monday. And who is filling her old post at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia these days? That would be Sharon McCauley, who until a few months ago assisted Steve Florio at Cond?© Nast. (Stewart evidently became better acquainted with McCauley while working on Florio's lecture series at New York University's Stern School of Business this fall - Stewart gave the keynote address.) GawkerRemember the Magazine Year That Kinda Wasn't By Gawker Editors 12/2/05 http://www.gawker.com/news/magazines/remember-the-magazine-year-that-kinda-wasnt-140589.php Because mornings are for tears and existential loathing, we present you with MediaPost's 2005 Mag Rack, published last January, which mentions the publications they were looking forward to in the coming year. As 2005 draws to a close, we found the following old list of anticipated publications to be most appropriate for your seasonal depressive nostalgia. What they once were hoping for: Racing Fan - There has to be a place for a mass market title covering the world of NASCAR and the like, given the sport's popularity and the lack of coverage in titles like Sports Illustrated. The New Frontier - Helen O'Donnell tries to channel the spirit of JFK Jr.'s defunct George following a year when politics were more top of mind than in decades. MORE ONLINE
