Mentors' odyssey picks up a thoroughly modern pace
By Patricia Kitchen
November 20, 2005

Ask anyone who came of age before "The Apprentice" about mentoring and you'll likely hear about a seasoned, high-ranking person taking a promising novice under wing - providing guidance through the workplace landscape and coaching on the climb up what was once a predictable career ladder. Mentoring today, though, like just about everything else, is quicker, more focused, less top-down, and even virtual: People are changing employers, even careers, more often, juggling more balls at a quicker pace, with their needs and priorities varying increasingly by age group.

[skipping ahead to the part about Ed...]

Speed mentoring

When it comes to economizing on time, it's tough to beat the 60-minute mentoring program run through Ed2010.com. That's a site for young magazine editors founded three years ago by Chandra Czape, deputy editor at CosmoGIRL magazine.

Editor wannabes get matched up with professionals - about 100 editors so far have participated - with the knowledge that the clock is ticking. Meetings to learn how to get entree to a job are limited to an hour. It's all about "getting you in the door and getting you in the know," says Czape.

Purdum quits NYT to become Vanity Fair national editor
Romenesko Memos

Times Washington bureau chief Philip Taubman writes in his memo announcing Todd Purdum's departure: "Few reporters in the long history of The Times have matched the radiance of his writing, his unerring knack for coming up with just the right anecdotes to launch and tell a story and his command of so many journalistic forms, including news, portraiture, analysis, scene, essay, narrative and history." ALSO: Jim Impoco leaves the Times business desk to become deputy editor of Conde Nast's new business magazine.

Holiday Help For Mom
12/5/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/58342.htm

'Tis the season to shine for the women's service magazines, their prime time for helping nice moms cope with the chore of creating holiday niceness.

Good Housekeeping, the biggest of the four titles with a circulation of 4.6 million, splashes a wholesome Reese Witherspoon on the cover in a strapless lam?© holiday number. She gives her thoughts "on making marriage work and being an old-fashioned mom." The cover story, "Holiday Magic ??” 254 Inspiring Ideas," is anchored among sweet sidebars including "Dazzling Decorating," "Christmas Cookie...

Redbook, the smallest of the pack with a circulation of 2.35 million, is picking up new readers with a format intended for more sophisticated homemakers. Subscriptions are up 3.5 percent. Its cover girl, "Law and Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay, talks about achieving success later in life. Redbook still likes to embrace sparkly holiday clothes and quick holiday dishes, but its main cover stories are mommy-centric: "Relax & Rejoice ??” Guide to Happy Hassle-Free Holidays" and "A Lifetime of Hot Sex? Yes!" Instead of giving hints on trimming trees, the issue tells how to trim pounds. It's for the more urbane homemaker, but it still offers recipes using canned soup.

4. New York Magazine
Life After Lapham
By Kurt Andersen
12/5/05
http://www.nymetro.com/nymetro/news/columns/imperialcity/15257/index.html

Lewis Lapham, the editor of Harper??™s, is very old-school. He wears a beautiful dark suit and a necktie tight around his buttoned collar. He not only still smokes (Parliaments, the recherch?© brand of Bond girls), he smokes in his office. He was educated at Hotchkiss and Yale and Cambridge. His manner, personal as well as literary, is Gore Vidalian, a patrician alloy of faint amusement and grand disappointment. He runs a 155-year-old, self-consciously old-fashioned magazine that??™s all about plain text, not packaging or pictures. The frothiest magazine he reads regularly is The New Yorker. He reads nothing at all online.

???I don??™t have a computer. I may have to get one.???

Why now? Lapham turns 71 next month.

RICHEMONT'S REVENGE: Advertisers can be a tricky bunch, and Compagnie Financi??re Richemont's outspoken South African chief executive Johann Rupert is no exception. A Richemont spokeswoman has confirmed an item in London's Daily Mail that Rupert has pulled the group's ads from Wallpaper magazine because of an insult to his native Afrikaans language in the September issue. Said insult appears not in an article, but in a picture caption in an otherwise upbeat travel spread on Cape Town. The picture shows architect Jan van Wijk's soaring, soft-edged monument to Afrikaans, which the caption refers to as a "remarkable 1975 tribute to one of the world's ugliest languages."

SHAPING UP: Valerie Latona, the new editor in chief of Shape magazine, is putting her senior editorial team in place. Latona, who was promoted from beauty editor after the ouster of former editor in chief Anne Russell, has hired three deputy editors: Janet Lee, previously fitness director at Self, is coming onboard as deputy editor in charge of fitness; Tricia Calvo, previously articles editor at Fitness, will oversee health and nutrition, and Mary Rose Almasi, who has been working on a variety of special projects at Hearst, will head up the beauty and fashion departments. A major part of their jobs will be to liaise with Shape staffers in the magazine's Woodland Hills, Calif., office, said Latona. Shape also has hired Sarah Robbins, a reporter at Glamour, as staff writer.

TRUMP'S JACKPOT: Reading celebrity magazines doesn't make you smart, but it just might make you rich. In Touch will be holding a $1 million giveaway this Wednesday night, with Donald Trump selecting the winner from three candidates. The finalists qualified by filling out questionnaires on the "Biggest Moments of the Year" in the magazine's Oct. 21 issue. A spokesman for the magazine said Trump will announce plans for the first Los Angeles-based edition of "The Apprentice" at the event, which marks In Touch's third anniversary.

The Week wants to be taken seriously
Commentary: But it will never be confused with Time

By Jon Friedman
Dec. 5, 2005

Seriously!

Yes, The Week can boast a battalion of adoring celebrity fans and impressive financial progress. Still, I doubt that the offbeat news magazine will be confused with Time, Newsweek or even US News any time soon. Put simply, The Week, at a precocious 4 1/2 years old, sorely lacks the prestige, reach and depth of its rivals.

The Week's claim to fame is that it publishes news without relying on original reporting (as approximately 99.9% of its counterparts do). While the publication's officials dread the pejorative label of a cut-and-paste operation, The Week does come dangerously close to filling that description.

It's certainly not for a lack of sweat. Editor-in-Chief William Falk told me that The Week's 17 staffers read -- or, more accurately, I suppose, glance at -- something like 1,000 publications a week and quote 200 sources per issue.
