Memo Pad: Wenner Eyeing A Sale? . . . Magazine Merrymaking
By Jeff Bercovici and Sara James

WENNER EYEING A SALE?: It's looking more and more like Wenner Media is not going to find a replacement for Kent Brownridge ??” not just one, anyway. According to Wenner Media sources, it is all but decided that, when Brownridge steps down as vice chairman and general manager at the end of the year, his duties will be divided among several executives, likely including chief marketing officer Gary Armstrong and chief financial officer John Gruber.

MAGAZINE MERRYMAKING: How does the magazine industry celebrate the holidays? With frog-leg lollipops and drunken renditions of "The Final Countdown." Here, how various magazines are rewarding their staffs at the end of another year.

Martha Flagship Adds Ads
By Bloomberg
12/6/05
http://www.nypost.com/business/59024.htm

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc., whose founder was released from prison in March, will more than double advertising pages at its flagship magazine this quarter, Chief Executive Susan Lyne said.

"We wooed advertisers back on the merits of the company," Lyne said at a media conference in New York. The company expects advertising growth will continue next year, she said.

The increase in ad pages at Martha Stewart Living magazine reflects efforts to reverse the "advertiser flight" caused by Stewart's 2004 conviction for obstruction of justice, Lyne said. The Manhattan-based company is also discussing expanding its line of Martha Stewart-branded housewares sold in Kmart stores to Kmart parent Sears Holding Corp. as well as other retailers, she said.

Jaguar, Land Rover ads halted in gay media, Ford confirms

12/6/05
http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid23064.asp

The antigay American Family Association claimed a cultural victory on Thursday and called off its threatened boycott of Ford Motor Co. On Friday, Ford spokesman Mike Moran confirmed to Advocate.com that the company will stop advertising its Jaguar and Land Rover brands in gay publications but insisted it was strictly a business decision.

The Dearborn, Mich., automaker came under fire from the AFA in May for its longtime efforts to increase LGBT workplace diversity and support gay rights causes. Ford has long been a regular advertiser within gay media, including The Advocate, and has donated significant sums to LGBT causes and nonprofit groups such as the Human Rights Campaign.

Threatened with a boycott by the Mississippi-based AFA, Ford and some of its dealers agreed to negotiate, and the AFA announced in June that it would hold off on its planned action. On Thursday, AFA announced the boycott would be canceled altogether.

The Stay-at-home Mystique

Brouhahas about maternal vs. professional priorities come and go like fashion: Remember when hollering about Sylvia Ann Hewlett was all the rage?

This season's vogue is for debate over women leaving the workforce to raise children full-time. It heated up in 2003 with Lisa Belkin's New York Times piece "The Opt-Out Revolution," which earned criticism for focusing on a small group of wealthy women and for Belkin's questionable data. This fall, the Times ran an equally controversial piece by Louise Story about how some Ivy League undergrads already claim to know they want to stay home full-time. In October, Times tornado Maureen Dowd blew through with a book excerpt alleging that post-feminist women were moving in reverse -- toward husbands and housewifery -- with such alacrity that we would soon have a population of Ativan-popping suburban mommies. In November Linda Hirshman wrote a searing piece in the American Prospect in which she dissed Belkin, Story and Dowd, but asserted that much of what they've proclaimed may actually be true. Then on Friday, the Times backpedaled, publishing a piece on research that suggests that maybe women aren't opting out at all.

Welcome to the fray the premiere issue of Total 180!, a magazine for working women who have chosen to stay at home full-time, with a tag line that reads "From briefcase to diaper bag. . ."

Fed Time for Gonzo at Rolling Stone
By Peter Carlson
12/6/05
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wpdyn/content/article/2005/12/05/AR2005120502048.html

Hunter S. Thompson is dead and P.J. O'Rourke is writing for the Atlantic and delivering after-dinner speeches to Republican fat cats. But that's okay because Rolling Stone magazine has a new political reporter with the gonzo spirit that made Thompson and O'Rourke so much fun. His name is Matt Taibbi and here's how he describes Tom DeLay in RS's Dec. 15 issue:

"Watching DeLay wade through a crowd of his own party members during a critical vote is an awesome thing, a nature show worthy of Sir David Attenborough. DeLay moves through the aisles like some kind of balding incubus, and as he passes, Republican members instinctively turn their backs on him, not wanting to be caught in the Gorgon's gaze (or, more to the point, be threatened with the loss of a chairmanship or reelection funding)."

Thompson, who committed suicide last February, invented the "gonzo" style in the 1970s by combining on-the-scene reporting, off-the-wall comedy and inventive invective. In the '80s, O'Rourke kept up the gonzo tradition from a conservative perspective. Both were gutsy guys: Thompson rode with the Hells Angels and O'Rourke traveled to various Third World war zones. Taibbi shows his guts by spending time with a group that's far more vicious and dangerous than bikers or guerrillas -- the United States Congress.

Williams wins libel damages against People
By Chris Tryhorn

http://media.guardian.co.uk/presspublishing/story/0,7495,1660164,00.html

The People newspaper and two celebrity magazines today issued formal apologies and paid "substantial" libel damages to the pop singer Robbie Williams over untrue stories that he was a secret homosexual.

The star, who sued over allegations printed last year in the People, Star and Hot Stars, will also have his legal costs paid by the publishers.

Williams' lawyer, Tom Shields, told the high court today the People had written a story in August 2004 headlined "Robbie's secret gay lover", which suggested his client was "about to deceive the public" over his sexuality in a forthcoming biography.
